UVA Football: Tony Elliott contract, Virginia-Wake first look

AFP Podcasts

Summary

Tony Elliott's contract situation at the University of Virginia remains unclear as details about his buyout terms are still being sought. After submitting a request to the FOIA office, Chris Graham received a copy of Elliott's 2022 contract, which does not clarify the buyout if he is fired without cause. The offer sheet signed in March extended Elliott's contract by two years and raised his salary to $5.4 million for the current season, but it lacks specific buyout language for termination without cause. The ambiguity surrounding the contract could lead to potential legal disputes if Elliott were to be dismissed.

In sports news, Virginia is preparing for its upcoming game against Wake Forest, which is scheduled for Halloween. There was an agreement for Virginia to wear all orange while Wake Forest dons all black, but recent statements from Wake's coach suggest that Virginia may not honor this arrangement. The game is significant, with Wake Forest favored by 13.5 points, largely due to Virginia's struggles this season. Wake Forest's quarterback, Gio Lopez, has impressive statistics, contributing to the team's strong performance, while Virginia's ongoing quarterback situation remains uncertain as Elliott continues to support Bo Perbula as the starter. The matchup promises to be an exciting event, and fans are encouraged to attend in costume.

Show Notes

I wrote to the FOIA office at the University of Virginia on Saturday to request a copy of UVA Football coach Tony Elliott’s most recent contract, in line with my effort to try to determine what the buyout would be, if UVA Athletics were to want to cut bait with Elliott ahead of the end of the deal on May 31, 2031. What the FOIA folks sent me today: a fresh copy of his 2022 contract. *** Wake Forest and Virginia reportedly had an agreement in the summer to go black (Wake) and orange (Virginia) with their uniform color schemes for their scheduled Saturday, Oct. 31 game. Word is leaking out that the folks on the UVA Football side aren’t going to play along, which, bummer. And actually, it’s not a leak – that word came straight from the mouth of Wake Forest coach Jake Dickert.

Eight games into a lost season, UVA Football fans, understandably, are overreacting, because that’s what college football fanbases do when things go sour.

The Family Foundation, morally opposed to letting a trans kid even try out for a high school athletics team, is helping a homeschooled kid in Roanoke County whose parents fear that sending their precious little one to public school would “would expose him to worldviews, assumptions, and educational philosophies that are contrary to their faith” get a spot on a public school cross country and track team.

I’m not the AD at Virginia, which, great news for Virginia there, because the donors wouldn’t give the athletics department a dime if I were running it. Kissing the asses of the money people is an important part of the job. The other part of the job involves being the ultimate person within the football program. Carla Williams needs to treat her job like one of her roles is to be president of football operations. Here in the pod, I tell you how I would approach UVA Football if it were me serving as the liaison between the money people and Tony Elliott.

The people who fund UVA Football aren’t paying millions to lose 38-7 to a program that is about to fire its coach. The ball is now in the court of head coach Tony Elliott, who has a lot of fixin’ to do ahead of this week’s game with Syracuse. I don’t know that I expect the fixin’ to be all that extensive, but here on the pod, I lay out what seems to be an obvious first point of focus.
