Inside a jam-packed auditorium on the campus of University of Texas El Paso, James Talarico slammed tech tycoon Elon Musk, drawing huge cheers from the audience, as he accused the world’s richest man of attempting to buy a U.S. Senate seat for Republican challenger Ken Paxton. Musk has reportedly poured nearly $200 million dollars into the race in support of Paxton’s bid. “Elon Musk wants his very own personal United States senator,” Talarico told the crowd. “Texas is not for sale,” he added. During his remarks, Talarico blasted Paxton for his long track record of corruption while in office in Texas. Just one week before Election Day in the U.S., polls show the young Democratic state representative holding a slim lead over Paxton in the hotly-contested Senate race. Following the event, young Talarico supporters, some in “Talafreako” t-shirts, said they felt inspired by the Democrat’s message. “I feel like I can be proud of my state again,” Sophia Guitierrez told us. A Talarico victory would mark a seismic shift in Texas, where Republicans have dominated the state’s politics for more than three decades. Texas has not had a Democrat in the U.S. Senate since 1993.
