Why William Farwell Didn't Take Sandra Birchmore Seriously
True Crime Today | Daily True Crime News & InterviewsShow Notes
Matthew Farwell's twin brother William was a Stoughton cop when Sandra Birchmore told him she was 15 the first time she was with Matthew, and on October 27th he told a federal jury why he didn't believe her. William testified with immunity and said he asked his brother about it for the first time after Sandra was dead, and Matthew said no. Then Dr. Bill Smock, the government's strangulation expert, testified her death scene was altered, pointing to a broken neck bone, a clasp mark made while her heart was beating and a necklace snapped under the strap. Farwell's lawyer Joanne Daley countered that Smock isn't a forensic pathologist and that officers saw no signs of a struggle. Prosecutors say Farwell killed Sandra to keep her from going to federal investigators, and he has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers say they could rest as soon as November 4th. Bryan Kohberger told the court he was satisfied with his attorneys when he pleaded guilty in the Idaho 4 case in July 2025. A year later, he filed a post-conviction petition claiming those same attorneys coerced him. Judge Steven Hippler emptied the calendar on October 14, 2026. Kohberger's amended petition is due January 13, and witness and expert disclosures are due February 1. Latah County deputy prosecutor Keith Scholl wants the petition thrown out without a hearing, arguing it's bare and unsupported. He also says Kohberger's claim of innocence isn't one Idaho law recognizes. Kohberger's lead attorney, Anne Taylor, had asked Hippler for more time before the plea. Her sealed memo told the judge Kohberger could not rationally assess his case. Hippler denied the request, and the memo has since been ordered turned over to prosecutors. I ask defense lawyer Bob Motta and ex-FBI agent Robin Dreeke whether Taylor's memo helps Kohberger or proves she did her job. In April 2026 Sandra Birchmore's medical examiner changed her ruling on the manner of death from suicide to undetermined, and on October 26, 2026 she took the stand at the Farwell trial. Prosecutors say she ruled too soon, relying on misinformation, while Farwell's attorneys accuse federal prosecutors of pressuring her. Dr. María del Mar Capó-Martínez testified that before the autopsy began, the police paperwork delivered with the body treated Sandra's death as a suicide and said foul play wasn't involved. After her suicide ruling, the Norfolk District Attorney's office didn't charge anyone. Matthew Farwell, who was a Stoughton police detective, has pleaded not guilty in federal court to killing Sandra along with her unborn child. Robin Dreeke led the FBI's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, and Bob Motta hosts Defense Diaries. They join me to ask what it would take to believe the medical examiner changed her ruling because of the evidence. Investigators on the Sandra Birchmore case say messages show William Farwell meeting Sandra outside her building after midnight on January 10, 2021. That was about three weeks before she died. They say he had told State Police he last saw her in December 2020. On October 26, 2026, William testified for the government at the federal trial of his twin brother Matthew. Because he was granted immunity, prosecutors can't use his answers to charge him. Matthew, who was a Stoughton detective, has pleaded not guilty to killing Sandra and the child she was carrying. When a prosecutor asked if he'd ever been intimate with Sandra while on duty as a Stoughton officer, William said, "I did." He told jurors their relationship goes back to 2018, when Sandra was already an adult. I ask Robin Dreeke, a former FBI special agent, and trial lawyer Bob Motta how a jury keeps one twin's testimony from deciding the other twin's case. William returns to the stand October 27. Gypsy Rose is certain Ken Urker didn't take his own life, and the coroner hasn't ruled. Matthew Farwell's lawyers say Sandra Birchmore did take her own life, and her therapist of five years says Sandra never expressed a suicidal thought. Melani Pawlowski says she knew nothing about the plot against Brandon Boudreaux, and Lori Vallow Daybell's prosecutor told a jury she was in on it. Robin Dreeke and I take each one: the deputies' report from Ken's bedroom, Sandra's texts about Farwell asking for a key and looking in her closet eight days before she died, and the 35-minute call between Lori's phone and Melani's in the hour around the shot. Three cases where the answer depends on whose words you trust. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. killed six members of his own family at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, on November 13, 1974. His mother Louise, his father Ronald Sr., and his four siblings were each shot in their beds with a .35-caliber Marlin rifle. No neighbor reported hearing any of the eight shots. The family's cleaning woman, Linnea Nonnewitz, had worked in that house for five years. Louise DeFeo talked to her. Louise wanted to die, Linnea said afterward. And one day Louise told her this: "I'm preparing you. Something so tragic is going to happen." This is Part One of a three-part documentary on the DeFeo murders and the Amityville Horror. It covers June 1965 through November 13, 1974 — the house, the family, the nine years of violence under that roof, and the night Butch took the Marlin from his closet.
