Show Notes
Ahead of our 4th of July battle for 1st place in the West, we talk to our UFA rivals from the Salt Lake Shred, Braden Eberhard and Jacob Miller.Braden and Jacob created Shown Space - the best analytics website for the UFA. The goal of Shown Space is to provide advanced analytics beyond simple stats like goals, assists, and blocks. Taken from the Shown Space website:"We all love stats for the stories they help us tell. Whether it's the arc of a season, the rhythm of a game, or the evolution of a player’s career. But basic counting stats often miss the mark. They ignore crucial details like field position, game state, or whether a throw actually helped a team get closer to scoring. Not all completions are equal — and not all turnovers hurt the same.Maybe you're a Frisbee fanatic on the hunt for the next data point to prove your theory on player impact. Or maybe you're a die-hard sports fan craving the Ultimate version of football’s EPA, one of basketball’s model-based plus-minus metrics, or baseball’s WAR.Shown Space is our attempt to bring rigorous statistical and machine learning methods to Ultimate, measuring how every pass, reception, and block impacts scoring probability. By intrinsically accounting for key context like time pressure and resets, we can create novel metrics and fresh perspectives for player evaluation and beyond. We're just getting started, and some of our favorite and most ambitious features are still on the way."Checkout the Shown Space website here:https://shownspace.com/More from Pod Practice:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podpractice_podYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@podpractice_podEmail: [email protected] Practice Store: https://ko-fi.com/podpractice/shophttps://ultimatelendingteam.com/homeforce/https://www.facebook.com/TheUltimateLendingTeamhttps://www.instagram.com/ultimatelivingcolorado/Greatest Bags: https://www.greatestbag.com/Use promo code: PODPRACTICE10 for 10% off your Greatest Bag OrderPod Practice BE Ultimate Store: https://shop.beultimate.com/collections/pod-practice-podcastDownload The Playbook: https://betterthanever.beultimate.com/the-playbook-infoShop BE Ultimate: https://beultimate.com/Kikko Socks: https://kikkosocks.com/Use discount code: POD15 for 15% off your next order.0:00 Intro2:30 Jacob's Frisbee Background3:54 Braden's Frisbee Background5:48 Sloan Conference, Beginnings of Shown Space14:40 Metrics - High Level Overview17:20 What is Adjusted Expected Contribution (aEC)?23:50 Field Value26:08 Field Value Visualized32:45 Completion Probability Over Expected (CPOE)39:48 Issues with Data and Data Collection42:02 Player Tendencies Visualized49:10 Player Impact (PI)54:19 Hucks vs Breaks59:16 Relative Offensive & Defensive Efficiency (rOE, rDE)1:04:22 How can we use Advanced Metrics? 1:07:58 Personal Use Cases for Braden and Jacob1:10:53 What do Metrics really tell you?1:15:39 Win Probability Added (WPA)1:23:33 Team Level Stats (Total aEC)1:27:09 The new Frisbee - Completion Probability 1:33:25 Consoling Quinn1:34:40 New Metric - Hockey aEC1:42:53 What does Shown Space mean?1:44:10 Outro

Rocky Beach has played ultimate for 32 years, including the original Revolver team in 2006. In 2016 Rocky founded Ultimate Impact, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports youth in San Francisco and Oakland. They provide underserved youth with opportunities for personal, professional, and athletic growth by building stable community for families through ultimate. This episode is a great listen for remembering the positive impact sports can have on young people's lives.More from Pod Practice:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podpractice_podYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@podpractice_podEmail: [email protected] Socks: https://tokay-ultimate.com/products/socks?variant=54370070135117Buy Tokay Cleats: https://tokay-ultimate.com/podpracticeSupport us by donating: https://ko-fi.com/podpractice/shopGreatest Bags: https://www.greatestbag.com/Use promo code: PODPRACTICE10 for 10% off your Greatest Bag OrderUltimate Mobility Membership: https://www.skool.com/ultimate-mobility/about?ref=1ac6179a76464cf892a7347232df540ePod Practice BE Ultimate Store: https://shop.beultimate.com/collections/pod-practice-podcastDownload The Playbook: https://betterthanever.beultimate.com/the-playbook-infoShop BE Ultimate: https://beultimate.com/Kikko Socks: https://kikkosocks.com/Use discount code: POD15 for 15% off your next order.
