Harvard i-lab | 2013 Deans' Health and Life Sciences Challenge -- TraumaLink
Harvard Innovation Labs: Startups & EntrepreneurshipSummary
TraumaLink, a new social enterprise, aims to address the critical issue of traffic-related injuries in Bangladesh by providing pre-hospital trauma care through a community-based hotline. The initiative, led by emergency physician John Musali, focuses on reducing delays in treatment for victims of traffic accidents, which currently contribute to over 20,000 fatalities and 400,000 injuries annually in the country. By connecting victims with trained first responders and directing them to appropriate medical facilities, TraumaLink seeks to save lives and alleviate the long-term socio-economic impacts of such tragedies on families.
The service model includes a 24/7 call center staffed by trained operators who will dispatch volunteers and transportation based on the severity of injuries. TraumaLink has partnered with local organizations, including mPower and BRAC, to leverage existing networks and ensure community engagement. The organization plans to fund its operations through advertising partnerships with companies looking to enhance their social responsibility profiles, thereby creating a self-sustaining model that minimizes reliance on grants.
TraumaLink's leadership emphasizes the importance of scalability and sustainability, projecting that with initial investments, the service could expand to cover all 150 million citizens of Bangladesh within five years. The team is prepared to navigate potential risks, including government resistance and community buy-in, by fostering strong relationships with local leaders and clearly defining roles among partners. Ultimately, TraumaLink aspires to significantly reduce the fatality rate from traffic accidents and improve trauma care accessibility across the nation.

With US health care expenditures at $2.7 trillion per year, we would be facing significant cost pressures even if our systems were producing health outcomes superior to those of comparable nations.
