Alex Murdaugh was back in a South Carolina courtroom in a suit and tie on October 16, getting ready for his double murder retrial. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins me to go through what Judge Debra McCaslin decided. The defense can test unidentified DNA from Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails and phone, over the state's objection that it could use up the samples. The state has to turn over original crime-scene scan data. The defense doesn't get ballistics records from unrelated shootings. McCaslin also put on the record that Murdaugh failed a polygraph about hiding financial records, after his lawyer had claimed he passed one. Prosecutors won't say whether a grand jury is examining a police officer friend of Murdaugh's. Eric explains what each ruling means for the April 5 trial. Six people took the witness stand in the Matthew Farwell murder trial, and his own desk mate testified that in eight years, Farwell had never once reached out off duty to ask what was going on. On February 2, he did, from his wife's hospital room, hours after prosecutors allege he entered Sandra Birchmore's building wearing a mask. Sandra Birchmore's friend Rebecca Chandler read four months of their texts to the jury. They covered the night Sandra wrote that Farwell looked around her closet, the morning she wrote that he asked for a key, and the baby clothes she sent on January 31, the last message Chandler ever got from her. Detective Barrett identified Farwell's walk and jeans on the lobby video, and the mask he'd called ridiculous. A friend was going to dig Sandra's car out for Thursday.
