Show Notes
On the program part one of a two part conversation with Bud Provin from Nickwackett Garage in Vermont. Bud was one of the first guests on the program when we launched a few years back, so if you are wanting to learn more about Bud and his personal history, dig into the show archives.
Today though, we’ll be asking Bud to go in the way-back machine and recall his days as a certified tech at both Bob’s BMW and his own shop to reminisce about design changes on 247 models from 1978-1984. Additionally and just as informative, we’ll start out the show with a discussion on ignition systems—starting with traditional points and going thru evolution of electronic systems.

Over the next two episodes we’ll visit with Chuck House who has spent a lifetime in the motorcycle industry with most fascinating stories to tell, as witness. Chuck started as BMW Tech in 1981 at Crescent City BMW in New Orleans and later worked as a rally mechanic and national service manager for Ducati North America.
Our man Ande Kahora from Barrington Motor Works is here to talk about conversions and key difference between the /2 and /5 series.
Gage Wagoner joins us from Seattle to talk about his conversion, a 1966 /2 frame mated with a 74 R90S engine. Gage also rebuilds Koni shocks, which were a popular upgrade on the airheads back in the day. So we’ll dig into that AND his roadside repair story is one you’ll want to stay tuned for.
Willam Plam joins us for a discussion on unique features found on the 247 run. This is not an exhaustive list but one that includes some of our favorite bits that, helped the BMW Airhead stand out among its contemporaries back in the day. We’ll also get an update from Willam on the latest addition to his m/c garage.
Part two of our conversation with Bud Provin discussing the various changes in the Airhead run from 1978-1984 including brake master cylinders, disc brakes, carbs and electrical systems among other topics.
