EP 55 - The New Personal Investment Account (PIA)

Ms Moneypennies

Summary

A new personal investment savings account (PIA) is set to launch in July 2027, generating interest among financial advisors and clients alike. The PIA will allow individuals aged 18 and over to contribute up to €12,000 annually, with tax-free benefits for funds up to €50,000. However, details regarding provider participation and specific rules remain unclear, leading to uncertainty about how the account will function in practice.

Financial experts emphasize the importance of starting to save and invest now, rather than waiting for the PIA's implementation. They advocate for understanding personal financial goals and creating a savings strategy that aligns with those objectives. The conversation highlights the psychological barriers many face when considering investments, particularly the fear of market fluctuations and the desire for immediate access to funds.

The podcast underscores the significance of regular financial reviews to adapt to changing circumstances and ensure that savings are effectively working towards long-term goals. As the financial landscape evolves, advisors encourage clients to seek professional guidance to navigate their options and make informed decisions about their money.

Show Notes

Jill and Kelly-Anne break down what we know so far about the new Personal Investment Account, due to start on 1 July 2027. They also cover what's still unclear and how to decide where your savings belong now. What we cover

Who can open one: anyone aged 18 or over. The annual limit is €12,000. Tax: gains are tax-free up to €50,000. Above that, a 1% tax applies to the value over the threshold, not just the growth. Open questions: which providers will offer it, charges, fund choice, transfers in, and rules on closing and reopening. Why you shouldn't wait to start saving. Match your savings to your timeframe. Use cash or fixed deposits for money you need soon, and investments for money you won't need for more than five years. Why goals and regular reviews matter. Other options: fixed-rate deposits, savings certificates and bonds, credit unions and pensions.
