A1 English News | Federal Reserve Waits as Inflation Rises to 3.7%
Learn English A1 | Slow Easy News for Beginners, DailySummary
U.S. interest rates are under scrutiny as the Federal Reserve convenes in Washington to discuss potential changes. The central bank is considering raising rates to combat rising inflation, which reached 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% the previous month. The Fed aims to bring inflation closer to its target of 2%. While many analysts anticipate that the Fed will maintain current rates for now, some express concern that waiting could pose risks as inflation continues to rise. The timing of the decision is particularly sensitive with the upcoming midterm elections, as inflation remains a key issue for voters.
In environmental news, greenhouse gas levels have reached alarming new records, according to a report from the World Meteorological Organization. Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, the three primary greenhouse gases, have all seen increases. Carbon dioxide alone accounts for about 66% of the warming effect from these gases, with an average rise of 2.8 parts per million from 2024 to 2025. Although this increase is significant, it is less than the record rise of 3.6 parts per million observed the previous year. The report emphasizes the long-lasting effects of these gases, which may persist for centuries, and precedes an upcoming UN climate meeting in Turkey.
