Aboard the Mary Ellen Moffet, Cooper Mitchell is close to completing the job for Steve Stanton and Bo Pan — the robot submersible Platypus is returning from the wreck of the Los Angeles, and it carries with it a piece of the Orbital. If the Moffet can collect the robot and the piece of Orbital, then the job is done. On board the Carl Brashears, Conroy Austin is unconscious as his body slowly changes into something else, something not human. And Tim Feely’s data-mining work is about to produce some very disturbing results.

Fire Engine 98 has picked up the survivors of the Chicago Cataclysm and is rumbling toward the extraction point. Helicopters are on the way to rescue Dr. Feely, Clarence Otto, Cooper Mitchell, Bosh, Klimas, and Ramierez, but only if they can survive the final wave of the converted that are hot on their tail.
The fire engine is tearing through the streets of Chicago, hosing down the converted as it does. It’s heading to Tim, Clarence, Cooper, Bosh, and Roth, but will it make it to them before the converted swarm into their store and butcher them all? Meanwhile, a Harley-riding Steve Stanton desperately searches for a way to kill his enemies before his kind is wiped out.
Paulius and Bosh are about to take a road trip to end all road trips straight through the converted.
