10 Things to Know About Neuroplasticity as a Stroke Survivor

Stroke Recovery Rehab

Show Notes

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change itself in response to its experiences and environment. Most stroke survivors have probably heard a therapist say something like “neurons that fire together wire together” or “use it or lose it,” which describes how neuroplasticity works. However, neuroplasticity is not going to provide dramatic overnight improvements in recovery. Instead, it’s the brain’s mechanism that makes long-term and ongoing progress after stroke possible. In this episode, I talk more about my experiences with neuroplasticity after stroke and some of the common misconceptions associated with it. Research indicates that hallucinations can be relatively frequent after stroke, and stroke survivors with sleep disturbances or damage to the occipital lobe are more likely to experience them. After returning home from rehab, I continued to be surprised by challenges with my vision, from struggles with extended screen time to sensory overload in public places. In this episode, I share some funny as well as frustrating challenges with vision after stroke and how those challenges have evolved over the years. A lot of healing after stroke isn’t visible. You can look “fine” to others but feel completely different inside as you work through identity shifts, frustration, fear of another stroke, and more. In this episode, I share an article that I wrote with my friend and fellow AVM stroke survivor, Florence Acosta, where we discuss the mental and emotional challenges that can come with recovery after stroke. Stroke survivor resources often emphasize the importance of exercise, but it’s discouraging to try lifting weights or running when you can hardly move one side of your body. However, once you find routines that really resonate with you – especially ones you can do at home or outside – you’ll find exercise can have a profound impact on your recovery after stroke. In this episode, I’m joined by Tricia DiGregorio to discuss key takeaways from our recent article: Why Exercise is Important After Stroke. *Note: This podcast was originally recorded as a Substack Live event on September 10, 2026. In this episode, I share an article that I wrote with my friend and fellow AVM stroke survivor Tracy Myers, where we highlight the common details you learn after finding out your stroke was caused by an arteriovenous malformation, or AVM. Since arteriovenous malformations are quite rare, it can be challenging to find information relevant to your situation that explains this unique medical condition in layman’s terms. For more information about AVMs and life after stroke caused by an AVM rupture, be sure to review the links and resources throughout this article: https://strokerecoveryrehab.com/2024/12/01/recovery-after-an-avm-stroke-insights-from-two-stroke-survivors/ For more stories like this from stroke recovery, read the free monthly newsletter at https://strokerecoveryrehab.substack.com/
