A2 English News | Climate Change Linked to Nearly 3 Million Deaths

The U.S. Justice Department requests that Washington state election officials set aside ballots from over 400 individuals suspected of being non-citizen voters. This demand, made just one week before the general election, has raised concerns among state officials, particularly Secretary of State Steve Hobbs, who argues that the timing could foster unwarranted suspicion about the election's integrity. Hobbs points out that one individual on the list has been in records since 1994, and he emphasizes that evidence of voter fraud and non-citizen voting is minimal and unlikely to affect election outcomes.
In a separate report, researchers from University College London and the World Health Organization declare climate change a global health emergency, noting that the health impacts are escalating faster than responses to the crisis. The report reveals that from 2016 to 2023, heat-related deaths averaged over 540,000 annually, with a significant portion attributed to climate change. For 2023 alone, an estimated 710,000 deaths are linked to heat, surpassing fatalities from malaria and HIV. The authors stress the urgent need for a more robust global response to the rapidly worsening health threats posed by climate change, which also negatively impacts economic productivity, resulting in substantial income losses.
