Makar Sets New NHL Salary Record + Hellebuyck Asks For A Trade
DFO Insider with Jeff Marek & David PagnottaShow Notes
The NHL's salary landscape has officially changed.
Jason Gregor and Jeff Marek break down Cale Makar's massive $20.4 million AAV extension with the Colorado Avalanche, the new benchmark it creates for NHL superstars, and what the deal could mean for the next wave of contracts, including Quinn Hughes and Adam Fantilli.
The guys debate whether players should be expected to take less money to help their teams win, how rapidly the NHL salary cap is rising, and what a potential $150 million salary cap could mean for superstar contracts in the future.
Then, the conversation turns to two of the NHL's biggest trade situations: Connor Hellebuyck and Dylan Larkin. Hellebuyck has publicly requested a trade from Winnipeg, but with no deal completed yet, what is holding things up? The guys discuss his market, Winnipeg's options and whether Hellebuyck could still be with the Jets when training camp opens.
They also break down the complicated situation surrounding Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings, including the team's search for a new general manager, Larkin's limited trade destinations, his captaincy and whether Detroit should wait for its new GM before making a franchise-altering decision.
Plus, Jason and Jeff debate whether NHL rivalries are being underutilized, why the league should schedule more rivalry games and how creating more meaningful matchups could help increase fan engagement.
The episode also features Buy or Sell, including Quinn Hughes' next contract and whether the Washington Capitals have done enough to become legitimate Stanley Cup contenders, plus Brady Tkachuk's expected impact with the Florida Panthers.
