William McKinley: Building the American Century

BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSaturday, October 31, 2026

Summary

William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, is often overshadowed by his successors, particularly Teddy Roosevelt, despite his significant contributions to American history. McKinley, who led the nation through a transformative period, is remembered for his role in the Spanish-American War and the expansion of American imperialism. His presidency marked a shift from a regional power to a global empire, overseeing the annexation of Hawaii and the acquisition of territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.

Born in Ohio in 1843, McKinley's early life was marked by a strong emphasis on education and abolitionism, influenced by his parents. He served valiantly in the Civil War, earning a reputation for bravery, which propelled him into a political career. After a series of political successes, including a term as governor of Ohio, he became the Republican nominee for president in 1896, running a modern campaign that appealed to a broad coalition of voters.

McKinley's presidency was characterized by significant domestic and foreign policy decisions, including the controversial McKinley Tariff and the aggressive foreign policy that led to the Spanish-American War. His administration's military successes solidified America's status as a world power, but also involved moral complexities, particularly in the Philippines. Despite his achievements, McKinley’s legacy has faded over time, with many Americans unaware of his pivotal role in shaping the nation’s trajectory. His assassination in 1901 marked the end of a presidency that had profound implications for the future of the United States.
