Could the Higgs Boson Point Us Toward Dark Matter?

PBS Space Time

Summary

The discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) marked a significant milestone in particle physics, confirming the standard model but leaving many questions unanswered, particularly regarding dark matter. Despite the Higgs boson's discovery, physicists continue to grapple with the elusive nature of dark matter, which does not fit within the established framework of known particles. Current theories suggest that the Higgs boson may play a crucial role in understanding dark matter, potentially serving as a bridge to uncovering new particles in what is referred to as the "dark sector."

Researchers are exploring various methods to detect dark matter, which is characterized by its weak interactions with standard model particles. Direct detection experiments aim to observe rare interactions between dark matter and detectable particles, while indirect detection looks for signals from dark matter annihilations in space. However, both approaches have yielded limited results, prompting a focus on the Higgs boson as a potential source of dark matter particles. The Higgs boson, which is responsible for giving mass to other particles, may decay into dark matter, leading to new insights into its properties.

Recent data from the LHC indicates that the Higgs boson may decay into invisible particles more frequently than previously thought. The Atlas experiment has reported a branching fraction that suggests a higher likelihood of Higgs decays into undetectable particles, which could include dark matter candidates. As the LHC resumes operations following upgrades, physicists are optimistic about further investigations into the Higgs boson and its implications for dark matter, signaling the beginning of a new era in particle physics research.

The discovery of the Higgs boson ten years ago in the Large Hadron Collider was the culmination of decades of work and the collaboration of 1000s of brilliant and passionate people. It was the final piece needed to confirm the standard model of particle physics as it now stands. There are still many outstanding questions - for example, it seems like nothing in the standard model can explain what dark matter is. So the discovery of the Higgs wasn’t the end of particle physics - but it may be the way forward. Many physicists think that the secret to finding the elusive dark matter particle will come by studying the Higgs. In fact, the first tantalizing evidence is already in.

The oldest fossils are now dated to only a few hundred million years after the moment Earth first became habitable. Is it really reasonable to imagine that evolution turned an unliving chemical soup into the first true living cells in that geological eye-blink? Well, maybe. But the discovery of the early appearance of life on Earth was definitely a big “huh, that’s weird” moment. And it’s inspired some creative thinking. For example, what if the first genesis of life – abiogenesis – is actually incredibly unlikely – so unlikely that it only happened once in the entire galaxy. And that “once” was not on Earth. What if primitive life arrived on Earth after having traveled vast distances across the Milky Way. Some scientists think this is the case. This is the Panspermia hypothesis.
