Low Carb Down Under

Dr. Ben Bikman - 'Shrinking Fat Cells: Energy vs. Insulin'

Low Carb Down Under

Summary

Marketers are increasingly voicing concerns over "bull spend," a term used to describe advertising expenditures that yield impressive metrics but fail to translate into actual revenue. In a recent discussion, industry professionals shared their frustrations about focusing on vanity metrics like impressions instead of meaningful outcomes. They emphasized the importance of cutting unnecessary spending and instead investing in platforms like LinkedIn, which reportedly offers a higher return on ad spend.

The conversation then shifted to the science of fat cells, particularly in relation to obesity and insulin resistance. A researcher explained the distinction between hypertrophic and hyperplastic fat cells, noting that hypertrophic cells grow larger but fewer in number, while hyperplastic cells increase in number but remain smaller. This growth dynamic is crucial in understanding how fat cells contribute to insulin resistance, a condition affecting nearly half of adults globally.

The speaker highlighted the importance of addressing insulin resistance at its root, suggesting that many chronic diseases stem from this issue. They also discussed the concept of the personal fat threshold, which varies among individuals and determines how much fat can be stored before health complications arise. The discussion concluded with insights on how hormonal regulation, particularly insulin, plays a critical role in fat metabolism and the implications for weight management strategies.

Dr. Benjamin Bikman earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. He is currently a professor of pathophysiology and a biomedical scientist at Brigham Young University in Utah. Dr. Bikman's professional focus as a scientist and professor is to better understand chronic modern-day diseases, with a special emphasis on the origins and consequences of obesity and diabetes, with an increasing scrutiny of the pathogenicity of insulin and insulin resistance. He frequently publishes his research in peer-reviewed journals and presents at international science meetings.Dr. Bikman has long been an advocate of a ketogenic diet in light of the considerable evidence supporting its use as a therapy for reversing insulin resistance. His website InsulinIQ.com promotes dietary clarity, healing, and freedom through evidence-based science about insulin resistance. Employing cell-autonomous to whole-body systems, Dr. Bikman's recent efforts have focused on exploring the intimate associations between the metabolic and immune systems. This presentation has been provided by @LowCarbUSA with generous support from @keto-mojo7147 and was recorded at the 'Symposium for Metabolic Health - Boca' in January 2024.Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon. Roblox Founder and CEO David Baszucki and his wife, Jan Ellison Baszucki, share the story of how ketogenic metabolic therapy (aka ketogenic diet) resolved all bipolar symptoms for their son. After four months on the diet, their son’s 5-year battle with bipolar disorder ended and his symptoms went into remission. While medications may have saved his life, nutritional ketosis gave him his mind back. Two years later, he is thriving, with zero signs of psychiatric illness. David and Jan shared their story as part of the first Metabolic Psychiatry retreat in Santa Barbara in May, 2022. Their family philanthropy, Baszucki Group, has launched the Metabolic Mind initiative to provide education in metabolic psychiatry. The Baszucki Brain Research Fund supports clinical trials of metabolic interventions like nutritional ketosis / ketogenic diets for mental health. The conference brought together physicians, neuroscientists, dieticians, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and philanthropists to build community in the emerging field of Metabolic Psychiatry. Experts discuss new approaches that have the potential to transform our understanding and treatment of mental illness.Learn more about metabolic psychiatry and meet the visionary Metabolic Mind Award Winners at https://tinyurl.com/Baszucki-Group Metabolic Mind™ is a nonprofit initiative incubated by Baszucki Group.
