Sandra Birchmore Believed Her Mom Came Back to Warn Her About This
Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & CommentaryShow Notes
Two women who knew Sandra Birchmore best took the stand in the Matthew Farwell murder trial on October 23rd, and both described a woman getting ready to be a mother. Lindsey Crean, her friend since middle school, said Sandra called her ecstatic in December 2020 and believed the baby was an angel sent by her late mother. Crean also told jurors she saw Farwell in the black pickup that picked Sandra up years earlier. Therapist Diala Alkhalil testified that on January 31st, 2021, Sandra said she feared something would happen to her in her Canton apartment. Prosecutors say Farwell strangled her there the next day, and he has pleaded not guilty. Farwell's lawyer suggested the pickup belonged to his twin brother, then turned to Sandra's history, from a 2020 text to the medication she'd just started. Her last questions were about what Sandra saw. The therapist's cross-examination resumes Monday, October 26th. Sandra Birchmore entered a police explorer program as a twelve- or thirteen-year-old girl. The officers who allegedly targeted her had unchecked access to vulnerable minors through that program. No meaningful background checks. No oversight. Multiple officers have been named in the alleged pattern of conduct that lasted years. Only Matthew Farwell has been federally indicted — and only for the murder. When Sandra's body was found, Farwell was treated as a colleague, not a suspect. Local investigators never formally interrogated him on camera. Building surveillance allegedly placed him at her apartment in the window prosecutors call critical. The case was initially closed as self-inflicted without a single warrant. The same DA's office and CPAC unit involved here overlap with the Karen Read investigation. The federal government had to intervene because local law enforcement wouldn't investigate its own. If Farwell is convicted, the accountability question extends well past one officer. The system that gave him access to Sandra when she was a child is the system that closed her case. A fractured hyoid bone. A severe chest imprint. Glasses placed neatly on the bed. A locked door. Sandra Birchmore's autopsy tells a story that has no parallel in documented cases involving the position the defense describes. The digital evidence runs the same direction: Sandra was buying baby supplies and looking up prenatal vitamins the day prosecutors allege Farwell killed her. Farwell was allegedly wiping texts. The FBI found over 32,000 messages state police missed on his phone. His DNA sits on the ligature as the major contributor. The paternity test confirmed the baby was his. Prosecutors allege Sandra's pregnancy announcement was the trigger — the moment his career and marriage ended. The defense says they'll challenge the autopsy with their own experts and attack the building surveillance timeline. But the injuries, the DNA, the digital behavior, and the paternity all point in one direction. The question isn't whether something violent happened inside that apartment. The question is whether twelve jurors will believe the defense's explanation for all of it. Eleven of twelve jurors wanted to acquit Lindsay Clancy. One man held out. Then it came out that Michael Desronvil had a dropped domestic violence charge from 2021 and an active restraining order against him during the trial, though Desronvil states he did not conceal anything. The defense demanded records. Judge Sullivan denied everything on October 21st. His reasoning: the information surfaced after the mistrial, so it can't change the mistrial. Desronvil told Fox News he had no doubts. The jury's foreperson says that's a lie — that Desronvil admitted reasonable doubt and voted guilty anyway. Now the bigger question arrives November 2nd: can they try her again? Lindsay's attorney Martin Weinberg will argue double jeopardy. DA Cruz still won't say whether he's pursuing a retrial, a plea, or dropping the case entirely. Patrick Clancy found the children, made the 911 call, and testified for the prosecution. He told 60 Minutes he's forgiven Lindsay and that what matters is perinatal mental health awareness. He's remarried and starting a family. His lawyer says the thought of going through this again is extraordinarily painful. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Alan Bono was 40 years old. He managed a kennel in Brookfield, Connecticut. He was stabbed on his own lawn on February 16, 1981 — the town's first homicide in 193 years. Three films, a book, a Netflix documentary, and a franchise worth over $2 billion have been built on his story. He is a footnote in every version. The family whose 11-year-old boy made it all possible received $4,500. The Warrens took more than $81,000. An ambulance driver testified to something no movie has included — Debbie's words at the scene about how Arne gets when he's been drinking. Arne Johnson has never said the devil made him do it. A judge barred the defense. Carl Jr. found a note after his mother died: she'd been putting Sominex in the family's food. Federal prosecutors say Matthew Farwell’s DNA was found on a duffel bag strap recovered around Sandra Birchmore’s neck. The defense disputes the government’s account of her death. Tony Brueski and former prosecutor Eric Faddis unpack the central evidence in Farwell’s federal trial and a second fight over police accountability in Stoughton. The government says security footage showed Farwell entering Sandra’s apartment building while wearing a mask on February 1, 2021. Prosecutors also described messages missing from his phone when Massachusetts State Police examined it, as well as Sandra’s plans to welcome a child and apply to a nursing program. Those details support the prosecution’s allegation that Farwell killed her and staged the death. His attorneys say he went to end the relationship and that Sandra acted on her own. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Another dispute centers on Police Chief Donna McNamara. She says Town Manager Thomas Calter ordered her to destroy findings from a second internal investigation. Calter denies the accusation. Reports indicate the 2024 inquiry concerned the handling of a phone call from Sandra’s friend warning the department about Farwell. What the report actually found remains undisclosed. Faddis weighs which prosecution exhibits jurors can evaluate directly, how defense counsel might challenge the meaning of a DNA match, and why a dispute over an internal police report cannot be treated as proof of the underlying murder allegation. The episode connects a contested physical-evidence case with questions about who inside the Stoughton department knew what and when.
