Alayne Wadsworth on Dancing With the Stars, Scoliosis Surgery, and becoming a World Champion
The Scoliosis ExperienceShow Notes
Many of those living with scoliosis wonder what they are still able to do. Alayne Wadsworth is a great example of reaching for the stars, even though you have the diagnosis of scoliosis. She was diagnosed as a teenager and wore a scoliosis brace for 5 years! After coming out of the brace, she continued to dance and used this as a way to escape from the diagnosis of scoliosis. During that time, she was on Dancing With The Stars. Through this time, she had back pain due to her scoliosis and noticed her curve was getting worse. She was then told by a surgeon that if she did not have surgery to "fix" the scoliosis, she would end up puncturing her lung. She had scoliosis fusion surgery and was told she would be done with her dance career. Amazingly, she was able to return from surgery and began dancing 7 months later. She eventually became a World Champion in ballroom. Alayne is currently a model, actor, and still dances! She is a great example of someone not willing to give up on their dreams and a fighter with scoliosis. This would be a great episode for those looking at being braced, having surgery, or wanting to still achieve their goals, despite having scoliosis. More from The Scoliosis Experience
What does it really feel like to live with scoliosis—not just physically, but emotionally too? In this episode, I sit down with Anna to have an honest conversation about her personal journey with scoliosis, the challenges she’s faced along the way, and the treatments that have helped her regain confidence, reduce pain, and get back to living life more fully. Anna shares what it was like growing up with scoliosis, how it affected the way she viewed her body, and the frustration of trying to find solutions that actually made a difference. Like many people with scoliosis, she experienced periods of pain, uncertainty, and feeling misunderstood by others who couldn’t see what she was dealing with beneath the surface. Throughout the episode, Anna opens up about the different approaches she’s tried over the years and the role each one played in her recovery and management of scoliosis. We discuss her experiences with Physical Therapy, Chiropractic care, and Functional Patterns training, including what helped, what didn’t, and how combining different approaches gave her a better understanding of her body and movement. One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is Anna’s perspective on body image and self-acceptance. She shares how scoliosis impacted the way she saw herself and how learning to focus on strength, movement, and function helped shift her mindset over time. Her story is a reminder that scoliosis is about far more than an X-ray or a curve measurement—it affects confidence, identity, and day-to-day quality of life. Anna also shares thoughtful advice for others living with scoliosis, especially those who may feel stuck, discouraged, or unsure where to turn for help. We talk about the importance of being proactive, learning how your body moves, finding the right support team, and understanding that treatment is rarely one-size-fits-all. Whether you are personally dealing with scoliosis, supporting a child with scoliosis, or simply looking to better understand how movement and mindset can impact long-term health, this episode offers encouragement, practical insights, and hope. If you’ve ever felt frustrated by pain, overwhelmed by conflicting advice, or discouraged by the limitations scoliosis can create, Anna’s story will remind you that progress is possible—and that living better with scoliosis starts with understanding your body and taking the right steps forward.
What does it actually look like to live well with scoliosis? In this special episode, we’re bringing you a live recording from a workshop we hosted right here in the clinic, where we sat down with patients and families to talk through the real-life side of scoliosis—beyond just the diagnosis. This session was also streamed on YouTube Live, and we had an incredible mix of people both in the room and online asking thoughtful, practical questions. In this episode, we cover:
Cold plunge. Sauna. And a message I care deeply about. In this solo episode of Hot n Cold Ones, it’s just me—moving between the cold and the heat—talking about something that needs to change in healthcare: 👉 Every scoliosis patient deserves to be given all of their options. Too often, patients are only presented with a limited path—usually observation or surgery—without ever hearing about research-backed conservative treatments that could help them take control of their condition. In this episode, I dive into:
