Gold Coast 500 daily: Friday

Full Credit to the Noise

Summary

Conditions at the Gold Coast 500 improve as teams prepare for the opening race, with a significant downpour earlier in the day giving way to dry track conditions for two of the three practice sessions. The highlight of the day is a 30-minute qualifying session that determines grid positions for the race, with Anton Di Pasquale taking provisional pole, followed by Brock Feeney and Matt Payne. The session sees a mix of finals contenders and non-finals drivers, with eight of the top ten being finals contenders.

Di Pasquale, who faced pressure coming into the weekend, expresses that he feels no additional stress as he aims for a strong performance. Meanwhile, Brodie Kostecki narrowly misses the shootout, finishing 11th after acknowledging mistakes during his qualifying lap. Jack LeBrock, starting in 17th, faces challenges in his quest to stay in title contention, while newcomers Jared Hughes and Cooper Murray have mixed results in their qualifying efforts.

The day's discussions also touch on the new beach chicane and the return of tire bundles, which drivers feel could pose challenges during the race. Despite the anticipation for a calendar announcement regarding future events, uncertainty remains as negotiations continue among teams. The atmosphere is tense as drivers and teams prepare for what promises to be an exciting race day ahead.

Show Notes

It wasn't as wet and wild as expected, but there were plenty of talking points out of Friday's action in Surfers Paradise. Our daily podcast unpacks it all. Dire weather predictions didn't quite ring true for Friday's on-track action on the Gold Coast with only one of the three Supercars sessions affected by rain. The crucial qualifying session was a dry affair as Anton De Pasquale put an under-fire Team 18 on top ahead of the Shootout. There was a big name – and Finals contender – that missed the Shootout altogether, while a solo debutant did a solid job on the challenging Gold Coast circuit. There was a penalty for Will Brown, more kerb and calendar talk and more. Andrew van Leeuwen and Stefan Bartholomaeus unpack it all in the Friday edition of the daily podcast.
