“I did four journeys. I was harassed eight times and assaulted once.” This week, Natasha and Carla are joined by investigative journalist Mimi Yates (@mimiyatesjourno), whose work brings social-first reporting to stories that are often hiding in plain sight. Most recently, Mimi went undercover on the London Underground to investigate the harassment women experience while simply trying to get from A to B – and what she captured was worse than she expected (but sadly, doesn’t really shock any of us). We talk about what happened across those journeys, the mental calculations women make without even realising it, and the people who could clearly see something was wrong… but still didn’t step in. Mimi also explains why even a tiny intervention from a bystander can completely change how safe someone feels in that moment. We also get into why so much harassment goes unreported, the difference between making women aware and making women afraid, and why the answer absolutely CAN’T be another list of things women should stop doing. Plus, Mimi takes us behind the scenes of investigative journalism – from secretly filming an investigation to squeezing months of reporting into a few minutes of social content, and why anger has actually fuelled so much of her career. PLUS: what’s been winding us up (London commutes, dark runs and the “I’m just a girl” era), Green Light, Red Light on getting your news from TikTok, five-minute voice notes and Irish exits; some pretty shocking public-transport stats in Guess Again; and Mimi’s big sibling advice on why you should never be afraid of being an angry feminist. Note: This episode includes discussion of sexual harassment, sexual assault, stalking and rape. HASSL’d contains mature content, including occasional strong language and conversations around harassment, misogyny and violence. HASSL’d is sponsored by Pod. “Some of the things I’m hearing are so stupid… but it’s dangerous.” This week, Natasha and Carla are joined by Dev Bajwa (@ammandev ) – comedy creator, professional reactor to some of the internet’s most unhinged takes, and founder of inclusive football community Dev FC. Dev tells us how making fun of red-pill podcasts and content turned into something a lot bigger: using comedy to challenge misogynistic ideas. We get into the hypocrisy of the manosphere, why some men will listen to other men before they’ll listen to women, what actually makes someone a “man”, and whether laughing at terrible takes risks amplifying them instead. We also talk about football culture, why Dev’s girlfriend feels unsafe in spaces he experiences as home, what men miss when they don’t know the reality of women’s everyday lives – and why calling yourself a decent man isn’t much use if you stay quiet around men who aren't behaving like one. Somewhere in amongst all that: train delays, Manchester United ruining Dev’s life, Crocs, phone snooping and whether getting upset at a football match is a red flag. PLUS: what’s been winding us up and Green Light, Red Light, as always; a pretty horrifying Guess Again about how young misogynistic attitudes are starting; and Dev’s big sibling advice. Note: This episode includes discussion of child sexual abuse material, domestic abuse, sexual violence, racism and misogyny. HASSL’d contains mature content, including occasional strong language and conversations around harassment, misogyny and violence. HASSL’d is sponsored by Pod. “I’m single, I’ve never been married, I don’t have kids… but I’m happy.” Apparently, being a woman in your 40s, single, childfree and actually enjoying your life is enough to seriously upset some men online… This week, Natasha and Carla are joined by broadcaster, presenter and self-love and confidence coach Claira Hermet (@missclairahermet). We talk about the reaction Claira received when she started sharing her life online, why women are still sold such a narrow idea of what happiness is supposed to look like, and how much of what we think we want – marriage, children, the whole prescribed life plan – is actually ours. Claira describes the backlash just simply saying that she was single and happy… and why that response made her want to talk about it even more. We also get into women in male-dominated industries, body image and confidence, grief and learning to build a life you genuinely want. Claira shares the story behind her preventative double mastectomy – and what the experience taught her about how much femininity and women’s worth are still so tied to our bodies. PLUS: what’s been winding us up as always; Green Light, Red Light on feminism, work spouses, Snapchat, “natural women” and keeping your surname; a very on-theme Guess Again; and Claira’s big sibling advice. Note: This episode includes discussion of bereavement, cancer, preventative mastectomy, eating disorders and sexual harassment. From 23:07 to 24:38, Claira discusses her experiences of bereavement - and overall, there is discussion of the above throughout. “Why is it strange for two guys to go on a man-date?” This was SUCH a hilarious yet thought-provoking episode – we can’t wait to share it with you! This week, Natasha and Carla are joined by Tom Stroud (@stroudtom) and Dan Shrigley (@danshrigley), founders of Shoulder to Shoulder – a community helping men make friends, talk properly and rethink some of the ideas they’ve been handed about masculinity. You might also recognise Tom from Love Is Blind UK – although apparently he never mentions it... Tom and Dan share how a viral clip about Tom’s “feminine traits” led to a coffee date, which turned into Shoulder to Shoulder... and from there, we get into male friendship, loneliness, and what happens when men don’t have healthy places to connect – including when that loneliness turns into resentment towards women. We also talk about what “good men” can actually do beyond simply knowing they’re good men, whether better male friendships could play a part in making women safer, and why men need spaces where they can actually talk to each other. Somewhere in amongst all that, there’s also what's been winding us up; a chaotic green light, red light; some surprising stats on masculinity in Guess Again; two very different pieces of big sibling advice and a perfectly normal first-date screening technique (according to some). Note: This episode includes discussion of depression, mental health, violence against women and sexual harassment. HASSL’d contains mature content, including occasional strong language and conversations around harassment, misogyny and violence. ---- HASSL’d is sponsored by Pod. “If it’s not about keeping women safe… what are you actually here for?” What happens when women’s safety becomes part of a much bigger political argument – and how do you actually get through to someone when you completely disagree? This week, Natasha and Carla are joined by Femi Oluwole (@femi_sorry ) – political activist, creator and street interviewer, known for taking some of the biggest political arguments off the internet and talking them through face-to-face. We get into the political narratives that form around women’s safety, how to challenge someone without immediately shutting down the conversation, and what Femi has learnt from speaking to people whose politics are worlds apart from his own. We also talk about algorithms rewarding outrage over nuance, media literacy, why what men say when they’re around other men matters, and Femi’s own experiences – including how power and physical safety can completely change the way the same experience is understood. PLUS: what’s been winding us up (from the heavy to the light stuff), Green Light, Red Light on politics, cats, terrible repliers and people who clap when the plane lands (!), and Femi’s big sibling advice. Note: This episode includes discussion of childhood abuse, sexual harassment and violence. From 24:24-28:03, Femi discusses his experiences of abuse and safety in sexual situations. HASSL’d contains mature content, including occasional strong language and conversations around harassment, misogyny and violence.
