Episode 22 - Shamrock Rovers return from international break The Milltown Way returns during the international break to take stock of where things stand at Shamrock Rovers, with a number of players involved at international level and attention beginning to turn towards a return to league action.
We start with a look at the Ireland underage setup, where several Rovers players have been involved in recent fixtures. Michael Noonan completed the full 90 minutes in the Ireland U21s’ 1-1 draw away to Moldova U21, a strong indication of the trust being placed in him at that level. We discuss what that means for his development, his role at club level, and the importance of gaining experience in that environment. We also touch on the involvement of Cory O'Sullivan, who remained an unused substitute, and Adam Brennan, who withdrew from the squad due to injury. With another U21 fixture away to Kazakhstan coming up, we consider what further involvement might look like and what this period means for Rovers players in terms of development and squad management. At U19 level, Alex Noonan featured in a 3-3 draw with Scotland U19, and we briefly reflect on the value of exposure to that level, particularly in high-scoring, open games, as well as looking ahead to their upcoming fixture against Italy. We then turn our attention to the Shamrock Rovers Women, who recorded an impressive 5-0 win away to Sligo Rovers Women. Following on from last week’s coverage, we are joined once again by Christine Allen, who provides insight into the performance, the key moments from the game, and how the side are shaping up at this stage of the season. We reflect on what this result says about the team’s response, their consistency, and the importance of building momentum early in the campaign. With no league fixture this week, we also take a step back to consider the international break itself and what it represents for Shamrock Rovers. Having put together a run of results and three consecutive clean sheets, we discuss whether the timing of the break is beneficial or disruptive, and what this period allows for in terms of recovery, preparation, and work on the training ground. We also touch on squad management during this time, particularly with players away on international duty and others dealing with injuries. Looking ahead, the focus shifts to a return to action with an away trip to Waterford FC. We discuss the nature of away fixtures in the league, the different challenges they present compared to home games, and the importance of how Rovers approach the restart following the break. Without making predictions, we consider the broader context of the game, including squad availability, the potential impact of returning internationals, and what will be required to maintain recent momentum. We close out the episode with some club updates, including a reminder of the Shamrock Rovers lotto and its role in supporting ongoing developments at Roadstone. There is also mention of the upcoming D22 Supporters Club fun run, which takes place on Sunday, April 12, as well as details of the South Stand Fan Scene event celebrating the history of Glenmalure Park, set to take place in The Dropping Well.
