He authored several short stories and novels in the Punjabi language including "Sooraj Grehan" and "Doaba." He was born in Amritsar, Punjab but had to move to the newly minted Pakistan after 1947. He begun writing when he was in school.Randhawa was a left leaning politician and a lawyer. He was vocal against Indian Military’s Blue Star Operation in 1984 on Harmandar Sahib, the central seat of Sikhs. He wote a poem – "Nawan Ghallughara" (New Holocaust) to express himself.In Punjabi, Randhawa wrote four novels, four collections of short stories, six collections of poetry, one collection of TV and radio dramas and three translated versions of an African novel, one collection of African poetry and one translation of interviews of world leaders. He also wrote a collection of Urdu poetry.In 1965, he published a collection of poetry "Sheesha Aik Lashkaray Dou"; followed by a collection of short stories "Runn, Talwar Tay Ghora" published in 1973. Other short story collections, include "Randhawa Dian Kahanian" in 1988, "Munna Koh Lahore" in 1989 and "Illahi Mohar" in 2013. Randhawa's further five poetry collections, include "Raat Daay Char Safar" in 1975; "Punjab Di Var" in 1979; "Mitti Di Mehek" in 1983; "Piyali Wich Aasmaan" in 1983; and "Chhewaan Darya" in 1997.He translated Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" as "Tutt Bhaj" (1986) and Gabriel García Márquez's "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" as "Maut Da Roznamcha" (1993) into Punjabi. In 2011, his collection of short stories "Elahi Mohr Tey Doojian Kahanian" was published.[Wikipedia]Alongside writing, he practised law and served as a member of Pakistan’s National Assembly from 1972 to 1977.Honoured with Pakistan’s Pride of Performance and the Kamal-e-Fun Lifetime Achievement Award, Randhawa remains widely respected on both sides of the Punjab for enriching modern Punjabi literature. Also known as Prem Parkash Khannvi, he was born in Nawanshahar and worked as a farmer, teacher, editor, and translator before editing an Urdu newspaper in Jalandhar and later working as a sub-editor for Hind Samachar. In 1970 he co-founded the literary magazine Lakeer with Surjit Hans. His work centered on social and sexual taboos, and his controversial novel Dastavez, about the Naxalite movement in Punjab, appeared in 1973. He was a Sahitya Akademi Award recipient and passed away in Jalandhar on 30 March 2025 at age 92.
