Show Notes

What goes through your mind when you're bidding more than $1 million on a hockey card?

Jason Koonce joins Jeremy Lee and David Chase after revealing that he was the underbidder on the Macklin Celebrini Gold Outburst 1/1 that sold for approximately $1.28 million.

Jason explains why he was willing to spend seven figures on a player only two years into his NHL career, where he originally wanted to be on the card, how a bidding war pushed him far beyond that number, and the moment he finally decided to stop.

It leads to a fascinating discussion about collecting versus investing, taking calculated risks on young athletes and whether there's additional enjoyment in owning a major card of a player whose entire career is still ahead of him.

Would Jason have been watching every Celebrini game if he'd won it? Absolutely.

Joe Poirot then joins the conversation as the guys debate the risk and reward of collecting active players versus waiting until their careers are established. Is there value in having some skin in the game and experiencing the ride, even when you know the investment could go badly?

Finally, Jeremy introduces another question: Do you trust yourself more than you trust the market?

Using his recent Barry Sanders Exquisite nameplate patch purchase as an example, Jeremy explains why sometimes decades of collecting experience tell you that a card is worth more than the market currently says it is.

Are you willing to ignore the last comp, trust your own judgment and pay what you believe a card is worth?
