A JuMBO Mystery - This Shouldn't Happen!

Cool Worlds

Summary

Recent discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Euclid Space Telescope have unveiled a significant phenomenon in modern astronomy: the existence of rogue planets, or free-floating worlds that do not orbit any star. This finding challenges existing theories of planet formation and suggests that such planets may be more common than previously thought. The JWST team, led by Dutch astronomers Mark McCrawkran and Sam Pearson, identified 540 candidates for rogue planets in the Orion Nebula, some as small as two Saturn masses, and noted that approximately 9% of these candidates exist in binary or even triple systems.

The implications of these findings are profound. Traditionally, it was believed that rogue planets could only form through processes similar to those of stars, which would require significant gravitational mass. However, the discovery of these low-mass objects raises questions about their formation. Theories are emerging that suggest these planets may have been ejected from their original solar systems, leading to a potential abundance of rogue worlds drifting through space. This scenario posits that many of these planets could have once been part of a larger system before being expelled, possibly due to gravitational interactions with other celestial bodies.

Additionally, the Euclid Space Telescope's observations indicate that the frequency of rogue planets continues to increase as their mass decreases, contradicting earlier models that predicted a limit to planet formation at around 7 to 10 Jupiter masses. This suggests that there may be a vast population of rogue planets, potentially outnumbering stars in the galaxy. As astronomers delve deeper into these findings, they are left with intriguing questions about the origins and characteristics of these elusive worlds, highlighting the need for continued exploration and research in the field of exoplanet studies.

Does life's early emergence mean life starts easily? Growing evidence shows that life got started very quickly (within ~100 million years) after conditions became suitable for life on Earth (~3.7 billion years ago). This is often taken as evidence that life starts easily, but is this really true? Prof Kipping explains why things aren't as simple as they seem.::More about this Video::► Nutman et al. 2016, "Rapid emergence of life shown by discovery of 3,700-million-year-old microbial structures": http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v537/n7621/full/nature19355.html► Allwood 2016, "Geology: Evidence of Life in Earth's Oldest Rocks": http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v537/n7621/full/nature19429.html► Outro music by Taylor Davis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl9kI1yQKZk::Playlists For Channel::Latest Cool Worlds Videos ► http://bit.ly/NewCoolWorldsCool Worlds Research ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsResearchGuest Videos ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsGuestsQ&A Videos ► http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsQAScience of TV/Film ► http://bit.ly/ScienceMovies::Follow us::SUBSCRIBE to the channel http://bit.ly/CoolWorldsSubscribeCool Worlds Lab http://coolworlds.astro.columbia.eduTwitter https://twitter.com/david_kippingInstagram https://www.instagram.com/cool.worldsTHANKS FOR WATCHING!!
