Sultan Mehmed II is remembered as the conqueror of Constantinople, but his victories rested on a deeper achievement: the creation of a disciplined military machine loyal to the throne. This video explores how Mehmed transformed the Janissaries from an unstable corps capable of mutiny into the elite center of Ottoman power. We examine the reforms imposed after Mehmed returned to power, the expansion of the devshirme child levy, and the rise of the kul system, which allowed recruits to reach the highest offices of the empire while remaining dependent on the sultan. We also enter the Janissary barracks to uncover their battalions, sacred cauldrons, uniforms, kitchen-inspired ranks, Bektashi traditions, weapons, and battlefield tactics. From composite bows and early firearms to disciplined formations and siege warfare, the Janissaries became central to Ottoman victories at Constantinople, Chaldiran, Rhodes, Mohács, and beyond. Their influence eventually stretched far outside the battlefield as they guarded fortresses, maintained order, and accumulated political power. Discover how recruitment, religious identity, strict organization, and gunpowder warfare turned the Janissaries into one of the early modern world’s most formidable standing infantry forces, and laid the military foundations for centuries of Ottoman expansion across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean world. How the Ottoman Army Began: https://youtu.be/ZYmtH9h9lf8The Rise of the Janissaries: Ottoman Military Revolution: https://youtu.be/nEDARlGzi4oWhy Was Germany so Fragmented in the Middle Ages: https://youtu.be/EiB8sMHxGqMEastern Roman Empire: Why So Many Civil Wars?: https://youtu.be/SK_yHooLu1sWhat Did the Europeans Think About the Eastern Romans?: https://youtu.be/Qu6NnWj1EZ8Were the Eastern Romans and Arabs Always at War?: https://youtu.be/nBMP6yRAOZgGreat Schism Between Greek and Latin Christianity: https://youtu.be/a6rWf0k8d78How Islam Split into the Sunni and Shia Branches: https://youtu.be/-85dXjgMiSURise of the Cossacks: https://youtu.be/UQ_ocyTRRIECrusades From the Muslim Perspective: https://youtu.be/t8RZtYvW02gEarly Muslim Expansion - Yarmouk, Al-Qadisiyyah: https://youtu.be/r2cEIDZwG5M Early Muslim Expansion - Egypt and Iran: https://youtu.be/baHT2nR5Wr4 Muslim Schism: https://youtu.be/-85dXjgMiSU Third Crusade: https://youtu.be/jCyCSgsFXKQ Fourth Crusade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vp_IENiSnA&list=PLaBYW76inbX4ZjR4rodOOSc-zL1orP4hW First Crusade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkyYjpYLORI&list=PLaBYW76inbX6RqjG027zLO_svn3Fdv7Qa Sultanate of Women in the Ottoman Empire: https://youtu.be/OEzS8D4IidA How the German Empire Provoked Ottoman Jihad in WWI: https://youtu.be/8LCpbgVx9kY Ottoman Battles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txyqS5yuw30&list=PLaBYW76inbX5BKGRPzlqdztQySZmJLjJt Why the Ottomans Never Colonized America: https://youtu.be/lM_Wzt_Z228Why the Ottoman Sultans Killed their Brothers: https://youtu.be/vN7LgUIOAVw Cem Sultan: Ottoman Prince in the Heart of Europe: https://youtu.be/3w9POQMt5jk Ottoman Pirates: https://youtu.be/5jguevSDIuY Turkification of Anatolia: https://youtu.be/JBgq1taoUsY Hashashins: https://youtu.be/vG8qmlKdRjs Christian Schism: https://youtu.be/a6rWf0k8d78 Mos Maiorum: What led to the fall of the Roman Republic?: https://youtu.be/BNWfDWk6ohM How Rome Conquered Greece: https://youtu.be/v5q1rerf-qw Caesar in Gaul: https://youtu.be/LRV185XaMIM Video: Yağız Bozan and Murat Can YağbasanScript: Ege Güneş https://www.instagram.com/historia_ Learn more about your ad choices. More from Kings and Generals
The Roman era came to a complete end more than 5 centuries ago, but it still one of the most discussed historical periods. One of the discussions is on the prominent figures of Rome and Byzantium. Some of them are called the Last Romans - Ultimus Romanorum, which signifies their deeds and exploits. This is our, highly opinionated list of the Last Romans. :-)Our documentaries take hours and days of research, but then we have to compress the scripts, in order to have a manageable watch time and to balance the historical accuracy and the entertainment. Naturally, many fun facts, bits and pieces and so on are not covered. So, we decided to change that by having a new series called the Bits and Pieces and to share our views, opinions, lists etc. This videos will not influence the release of our documentaries in any way and this Sunday you will be able to watch our video on the Battle of Austerlitz - the Battle of the Three Emperors within our series on the Napoleonic Wars. We also took into account the poll that showed that majority of you would like to see videos explaining the armies, tactics, weapons and their evolution. We already started research process and soon you will see the first results.Support us on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/KingsandGenerals or Paypal: http://paypal.me/kingsandgeneralsWe are grateful to our patrons, who made this video possible: Ibrahim Rahman, Koopinator, Daisho, Łukasz Maliszewski, Nicolas Quinones, William Fluit, Juan Camilo Rodriguez, Murray Dubs, Dimitris Valurdos, Félix Gagné-Dion, Fahri Dashwali, Kyle Hooton, Dan Mullen, Mohamed Thair, Pablo Aparicio Martínez, Iulian Margeloiu, Chet, Nick Nasad, Jeyares, Amir Eppel, Thomas Bloch, Uri Sternfeld, Juha Mäkelä, Georgi Kirilov, Moe Mia, Daniel Yifrach, Brian Crane, Muramasa, Gerald Tnay, Hassan Ali, Richie Thierry, David O'Hare, Christopher Commins, Chris Glantzis, Mike, William Pugh and Stefan Dt.This video was narrated by good friend Officially Devin.
