Ep 229 - Aerial Adventures and Landscape Tales with David Dahlenburg

Landscape Photography World

Show Notes

South Australian landscape photographer David Dahlenburg explores a creative life shaped by curiosity, emotional connection, and a deep respect for the natural world. David reflects on how his passion for photography began during a three-month journey through the UK and Europe with a 35mm film camera — an experience that sparked a fascination with crafting images that feel both captivating and mysterious. His travels through Peru, the USA, New Zealand, and across Australia helped refine his eye and ultimately led to receiving the 2019 South Australian AIPP Emerging Photographer of the Year award. David shares how creativity has always been central to who he is, from songwriting and performing in bands to now creating visual artworks that encourage personal interpretation. He speaks about his love for images that hold unanswered questions, inviting viewers to find their own meaning within the frame. Spending long, quiet moments in remote environments has also reshaped the way he sees the world. For David, waiting for light in the wilderness is both grounding and reflective — a reminder of the fragility and value of the landscapes he photographs. He also discusses the joy of knowing that his artwork hangs in homes across Australia and beyond, a meaningful affirmation of the emotional connection his images create. Through his thoughtful process and deep appreciation for the environment, David demonstrates how photography can open conversations and inspire a closer relationship with the natural world. Danielle Watson spent more than 20 years in professional sport as a tennis coach and biomechanics specialist before burnout brought him to a stop. She walked into a camera store in Melbourne one quiet afternoon, bought a DSLR without a plan, and photographed her eight week old kelpie. The images travelled further than expected and something clicked. The years since have been serious and deliberate. A Master's degree pushed her well beyond technical skill into meaning, artist statements and immersive presentation. Working alongside Ken Duncan taught her discipline, storytelling and the responsibility of making work someone might choose to live with for years. Film and a Hasselblad system slowed her process and sharpened her intent. In this episode Dani talks about co-founding Irid Gallery to present limited edition fine art photography at art fairs, moving from grand dramatic vistas toward atmosphere and aerial abstraction, and why she now makes far fewer images than she used to. Saumya Kesurvala has spent 15 years as a professional designer and visual storyteller, working across brand identity, editorial and environmental graphics. Landscape photography has become his way of stepping away from screens and reconnecting with the natural world. Growing up in a creative household and attending boarding school close to nature gave him an early appreciation for the outdoor experience itself, not just the images it produces. That philosophy shapes how he approaches long term projects, including photographing Uluru with the Milky Way core and capturing an osprey crossing the moon, both requiring serious research and pre-visualisation. In this episode Saumya talks about valuing community over gear, navigating social media comparison, and choosing exhibition images based on the joy of making them rather than technical perfection. He also shares memorable close calls on an Iceland glacier and a near encounter with a brown snake, plus his thoughts on AI and the importance of honesty in photography. I hope you enjoy the show! Noelle Bennett moved from northwest England to New Zealand in 2002 and was immediately overwhelmed by the light, colour and space of her new home. A camera arrived in 2013 and she hasn't stopped since. Now living in a tiny home in the foothills of the Southern Alps after living on a yacht her husband built in the Marlborough Sounds, Noelle seeks out quiet locations well off the tourist trail, often via off-roading and drone work to reach truly remote perspectives. Her ICM body of work grew out of a difficult period when her husband was seriously ill, The experience of pulling that body of work together was cathartic and ultimately earned her a Fellowship from the Photographic Society of New Zealand in 2025, their highest distinction. In this episode Noelle talks about spontaneous feeling led shooting, her post processing work in Affinity Photo including multi-image composites and live stacking, and using competitions as a tool for focus and growth rather than validation. Nilmini De Silva grew up in Sri Lanka, studied civil engineering at UC Berkeley, taught English in South Korea, backpacked across Europe and Asia, and eventually landed in Australia in 1998. A ten month sabbatical that included conservation photography work in South Africa, cheetah documentation in Namibia and a trip to Antarctica changed the direction of her life entirely. She launched her first exhibition in 2011 and spent five years living and travelling Australia in a motorhome with her partner, covering stretches of the country most people never see. These days her work centres on aerial photography, flying over salt lakes, flood plains and working sheep stations by drone and light aircraft, finding abstract paintings in the Australian landscape from above. In this episode Nilmini talks about discovering drone photography during COVID, repeated recognition in the Siena Drone Awards, how editing reveals muted aerial colour and texture, and using competitions and exhibitions as tools for honest feedback and craft development. Circle of Light is a collaboration between six landscape and nature photographers, Anna Morgan, Charlotte Gibb, Claudia Welsch, Jennifer Renwick, Michele Sons and Sarah Marino, formed to counter the isolation that comes with landscape photography and to push the boundaries of what nature photography can express. Their first project, the ebook The Nature of Place, brings together lead essays and dialogue style responses that read like a campfire conversation about creativity, connection to place and personal expression. It's the result of 18 months of Zoom calls, peer editing and genuine collaborative effort. In this episode four of the six members talk about building supportive peer community, encouraging photography as expressive art rather than technique driven documentation, and why elevating diverse voices in the landscape photography world matters to them. They also discuss solitude versus community, finding honest critique networks and their thoughts on AI's growing presence in photography.
