We are drowning in moral decay in America right now and it’s demoralizing. The weakness and willingness for so many of our fellow citizens to choose the path of least resistance has led us to a place where this upcoming election is existential. It is everything. The opposition needs to win to simply keep our heads above water. It is up to all of us to not only save us with our votes now, but stay engage in the days and years to come to build something better than what we’ve ever had. With the election coming up, fascism expert Jason Stanley, tells us not to think of our vote as midterm vote, but as an existential one. That changing the course of the world is actually in the American voter’s grasp. Indivisible’s Leah Greenberg reminds us that the powers that be want us to just give up. That they have done everything they can to disrupt the process of voting. To scare or discourage people out of voting. To make voting itself feel so uncertain that we forget we are still the ones with the power, and our power comes from our numbers. No Kings itself is a manifestation of those numbers, of our force and desire to show this country that we refuse to accept what’s happening. But No Kings is also about protecting the election and mobilizing for a post election response. It’s not just a rally this time. It’s hyper local voter turnout and, most importantly, a time to gather and train people for post election mobilization. As Leah says, what’s happening is “discouraging but it’s surmountable". In the past week, along with the horrendous Cornell 7, the news included: A man who jacked off to the woman next to him on a plane and United Airlines refused to deal with it, and made her go back to her seat. We discovered an LSU football player was found responsible for raping a girl, but the university lowered his accountability from suspension to probation in order to let him keep playing. A teenage boy was only given a restraining order after he stalked and stabbed a girl 10 times because she wouldn’t date him, and Vanderbilt University reported 50 cases of girls at the health center because of spiked drinks in the last week. The LAST WEEK ALONE. What the fuck are we doing America?!

As today’s guest, Ami Fields Meyer, reminds us in order to take back our future in this era of authoritarianism we need to get in league with a lot of different people. We are in a period of real trauma, but if we can put our differences aside and get past our own fear, the day of accounting will come. As Ahmi says, “They’re not going to get away with this shit. So whether we’re talking about the authoritarians trying to take over our country, or the tech oligarchs who think they are the only ones who get to decide our futures, we need to stay skeptical, insist on safeguards, hold up our institutional power and use whatever leverage we have to fight back.
