Alfred the Great: The King Who Defeated the Vikings and Helped Unite England
BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleSummary
Alfred the Great, the only English monarch to earn the title "the Great," is celebrated for his pivotal role in defending Wessex against Viking invasions during the late 9th century. Born in 849 AD, Alfred ascends to the throne at a time when the Viking threat looms large, with the Great Heathen Army launching a full-scale invasion of England. His early reign is marked by a series of battles against the Vikings, including mixed results at Nottingham and Reading, which set the stage for his eventual rise as a formidable leader.
Facing overwhelming odds, Alfred employs a combination of military strategy and diplomacy. After suffering defeats, he retreats to Somerset, where he rallies local militias and adopts guerrilla tactics against the invaders. His decisive victory at the Battle of Eddington in 878 forces the Viking leader Guthrum to negotiate peace, leading to the Treaty of Wedmore. This treaty not only establishes boundaries between the kingdoms but also sees Guthrum convert to Christianity, further solidifying Alfred's influence.
Beyond military achievements, Alfred initiates significant reforms to strengthen his kingdom. He develops a navy, fortifies settlements, and implements a literacy program to revive learning and culture in Wessex. Although he does not live to see the unification of England, his efforts lay the groundwork for future kings to achieve this goal. Alfred's legacy endures as a symbol of resilience and leadership in the face of adversity.
