Summary
Marketers are increasingly concerned about the effectiveness of their advertising campaigns, with many reporting high impressions but low conversion rates, a phenomenon referred to as "bullspend." This term highlights the disconnect between metrics that look good on paper and actual revenue generation. The discussion emphasizes the need for marketers to focus on tangible results rather than just reach, with LinkedIn being highlighted as a platform that offers the highest return on ad spend among major networks.
In the realm of astronomy, the focus shifts to Proxima b, an exoplanet orbiting the nearest star to the solar system, Proxima Centauri. Proxima b is a small, rocky planet that may have conditions suitable for liquid water, making it a prime candidate for the search for extraterrestrial life. Researchers aim to analyze its atmosphere using transmission spectroscopy, a method that involves studying the light filtered through the planet's atmosphere as it passes in front of its star. However, Proxima b does not transit in a way that allows for this method to be employed directly.
Instead, scientists plan to utilize the Doppler shift effect, which involves measuring changes in the light spectrum as Proxima b moves towards or away from Earth. This technique can help identify the unique spectral fingerprints of atmospheric molecules, even without a direct transit. The success of this method has been demonstrated in studying hot Jupiters, and large ground-based telescopes set to come online in the early 2020s are expected to enhance the ability to detect and analyze the atmospheric composition of Proxima b, potentially revealing whether it has an atmosphere and what it contains.
Show Notes
As regular watchers of the channel may remember, this summer astronomers announced the discovery of a potentially Earth-like planet orbiting our nearest star, Proxima Centauri. Sadly, research at the Cool Worlds Lab was unable to find any evidence that Proxima b transits its star, which is a blow for those hoping for near-term characterization of its atmosphere. But! Dr Jayne Birkby comes to the rescue and explains here how an alternative technique should work if we can wait a few years! Thanks to Jayne for visiting the lab and giving us all some hope for Proxima!::More about this Video::► Dr Jayne Birkby homepage: http://home.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~birkby/wordpress/► Snellen et al. This semester I taught "Exoplanets & Astrobiology" at Columbia and decided to do something a bit non-traditional and ask my class to make outreach videos in any style they want about a topic we covered in class. This video, by Elliotte Jun Beom Lee, Natalie Gaisser & Huiying Zhang was voted the class favorite and so I decided to upload it on the Cool Worlds channel to share with everyone! Let us know what you think and if you have any questions about habitable-zones.You can check out some of the other great videos made by class here:► "What is a Planet by the Left-Handed Sneutrinos" by Leah Hays, Greg Humphries & Kaitlyn Loftus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4U9kd9NjaA► "Sipping with Kipping" by Jeff Xie and Gabrielle Englemann-Suisse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4U9kd9NjaA► "Astrometry & Exoplanets" by Shreyas Vissapragada and Briley Lewis: http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=7osiO8m::More about this Video::► Kopparapu et al.
