London, November 1896. Fog over Baker Street, a fire in the grate, and a short paragraph in an evening paper that most readers passed over under the impression that it advertised a theatrical entertainment. Its heading was The Mourning Visitor.

Samuel Creed, a retired porter in Bloomsbury, has died in the night. On the afternoon before, an elderly woman in black called at his lodgings, asked for a chair beside the fire, and told him she had come to wait for his funeral. A fortnight earlier, in Kensington, Mr Gideon Prowse died the same way, after the same visitor.

Doctor Lionel Kendrick, a careful, retired physician whom Watson has met, has written three letters to the editor about the story. None has been printed. His latest is described as agitated.

Sherlock Holmes is interested in what was actually witnessed and what the newspapers merely repeated. Then word comes that the woman in black has called on Doctor Kendrick himself.
