An English village in autumn. Tea at the vicarage, knitting needles clicking, and in seventeen minutes flat, three illnesses, two engagements and a scandal concerning the new butcher's wife.

The real topic, though, is Mr Adrian Bellamy. Silver-haired, beautifully mannered, a widower of fifty-five who came to live at The Cedars eighteen months ago, he has become the most popular man in three villages. He remembers birthdays. He sends flowers. And he writes the most beautiful letters of condolence anyone has ever read.

He also attends funerals. Fourteen of them last year, for people he had never met.

A sharp-eyed elderly lady in the corner is reminded of a gentleman she once knew, who adored weddings because they reminded him of his own happy marriage. Except that he had never been married.

Then a grieving sister receives one of Mr Bellamy's six-page letters on a Saturday morning, shows it to her neighbour before luncheon — and is dead by midnight.

A village sleuth notices distinctions. Particularly when they concern death.
