The Moment You Surrender, Everything Changes! | Fr. Daniel Klimek

Homilies from the National Shrine

Show Notes

In this powerful teaching, Fr. Daniel Klimek reflects on Jesus spending the night in prayer before choosing His twelve apostles and the extraordinary transformation of these men through the Holy Spirit. Though the apostles struggled with fear, weakness, denial, and betrayal, Pentecost transformed them into courageous witnesses willing to suffer and die for Christ. Their journey reminds us that holiness and spiritual strength do not come from human talent, confidence, or self-sufficiency, but from surrendering to God and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through our weaknesses.

Fr. Klimek challenges us to abandon the idols of control, pride, and self-reliance and discover the true freedom that comes from depending entirely on God. Through the example of the apostles and a moving testimony of a Catholic leader brought to her knees in prayer, he reveals that authentic spiritual leadership begins when we humbly acknowledge, “Lord, I cannot do this without You.” When we embrace our dependence on God, the Holy Spirit can transform our weakness into strength, our fear into courage, and our struggles into opportunities for grace. True freedom begins when we stop relying on ourselves and surrender everything to the Lord. In this powerful reflection, Fr. Mark Baron, MIC, explores the reality of spiritual warfare through St. Paul’s teaching in Ephesians 6:10–18. Drawing inspiration from the novel This Present Darkness and the experiences of St. Faustina, he reminds us that our greatest battles are not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil. Fr. Mark reveals how the devil uses deception to sow doubt, discouragement, despondency, and ultimately despair, leading souls away from God. Yet, through Jesus Christ, the victory over evil has already been won, and we are called to stand firm by putting on the full armor of God.

In this powerful biblical teaching, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, explains the true roles of husband and wife in Christian marriage and their sacred mission of helping each other reach Heaven. How can the husband be the head of the family while both spouses remain equal in dignity? Scripture teaches that the husband is called to love his wife as Christ loves the Church, sacrificing himself for her even to the point of death. The wife is called to lovingly cooperate with her husband in their shared mission of holiness. Submission is not about inferiority, control, or domination, but about love, trust, sacrifice, and working together toward Heaven. God created man and woman differently, yet equally, to complement one another in a beautiful union centered on Christ.

Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, reminds us that Jesus Himself fulfilled the law of the Sabbath and established its deeper meaning—not the Catholic Church. Jesus taught that the Sabbath was made for humanity, not humanity for the Sabbath (Mark 2:27). When He healed on the Sabbath, He challenged religious leaders who placed strict observance of rules above compassion, mercy, and human dignity. He exposed their hypocrisy because they had forgotten the purpose of God's law: to bring people closer to Him through love, healing, and mercy. God's mercy does not rest on the Sabbath; it is available every day. Human regulations must never take precedence over God's commandment to love our neighbor. This teaching invites reflection on the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictions, social distancing, isolation, and church closures created profound spiritual and emotional suffering. These policies "Law" raised serious questions about loneliness, mental health, access to worship, and whether compassion was sometimes overshadowed by rigid policies. The Sabbath reminds us that rules should serve human well-being, never become more important than the people they protect.

What makes a life truly meaningful? Is it worldly success, recognition, or the souls we help bring to Jesus Christ? Inspired by the spiritual teachings of Fr. Daniel Klimek, this powerful reflection challenges priests, bishops, and every Christian to rediscover their sacred mission: the salvation of souls. The Christian life is a spiritual battle between the Kingdom of Light and the kingdom of darkness. Priests are called by God to be courageous spiritual warriors, defenders of divine truth, and shepherds who lead souls to heaven. Through prayer, sacrifice, the sacraments, and fidelity to Christ, countless souls trapped in mortal sin can receive the grace of conversion. The urgent question remains: How many souls are you helping to save today?

Fr. Tyler Mentzer, MIC, reminds us of the importance of recognizing the signs of the times and preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus Christ. Before coming as the Just Judge, Jesus offers His mercy to the world, inviting everyone to repentance, conversion, and salvation. Just as people can interpret the signs of nature and predict changes in the weather, we are also called to recognize the spiritual signs of our times and understand what God is asking of us. His message is clear: repent, believe in the Gospel, and turn to God's mercy while there is still time. We must not rely on our own strength or attempt to save ourselves, because only God can grant us the gift of eternal life.
