[Mindset Change] The Necessity of Suffering: Why Things Have to Go Wrong in Life | Episode 053
The GYST of It - Anxiety and Self-Confidence Advice, Guides and ConversationsShow Notes
In the funny, moving and downright chaotic series The Good Place there is a moment in it which genuinely made me think hard.
The show, if you haven’t seen it, is all about the afterlife and essentially the existence of “heaven/The Good Place” and “hell/The Bad Place” and what qualifies people to be in either.
I’m someone who hates spoilers so will not ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it.
At one point some characters arrive in The Good Place and are met with someone of the most influential, compassionate, kind and brilliant people from history who have been there since they passed. In The Good Place they can do anything, have anything and nothing ever goes wrong.
And guess how everyone feels?
Bored.
In fact so bored that they want to die, but they can’t because they’re already dead - so they’ve been condemned to an afterlife of “perfection”.
I found this so interesting and alarmingly accurate.
People speak about winning the lottery so that they could buy this, have that, do this etc without any burden, troubles or responsibility but is that what they really want? In this vlog I’m going to be discussing why suffering is actually necessary in order for us to enjoy life.

Karma eh?
Why is it that some people are completely chilled about dating, others overanalyse every interaction and message, and there are others who seem to deliberately sabotage what seem like perfectly reasonable dating opportunities?
