Maryland's Anne Arundel County has confirmed that hackers accessed some government systems and stole files following suspicious activity detected on August 28. The Rashada ransomware gang has claimed responsibility, demanding a $2 million ransom in exchange for not leaking 2.6 terabytes of data. This incident impacts a county that serves over 600,000 residents, including the state capital, Annapolis.
Additionally, the town of Bernalillo, New Mexico, experienced a ransomware attack that disrupted most public-facing online services. The attack was detected by the town's IT director, who took immediate action to disconnect affected computers. Details regarding the attackers, ransom demands, or plans for payment remain undisclosed, and the incident has led to the closure of the local motor vehicle department.
