Chukwu Mecca Victor Amachukwu receives an eight-year prison sentence for his role in a hacking and identity theft scheme that targeted U.S. tax preparation businesses starting in 2019. The U.S. Department of Justice reveals that Amachukwu and his accomplices used spearfishing emails to steal tax and personal information from over 800 customers, filing fraudulent tax returns that sought $8.4 million in refunds. They successfully obtained around $2.5 million through these fraudulent activities.
In India, the State Bank of India reports a cyber attack that exposed 3,897 customer records containing sensitive personal information on the dark web. The compromised data includes names, phone numbers, and loan records. An independent cybersecurity agency has been engaged to investigate the breach amid increasing regulatory scrutiny on Indian banks to enhance their cyber defenses.
In Texas, nearly 38,000 individuals may have had their personal information compromised due to a cyber attack on Frontline Education, a software provider for the Klein Independent School District. The breach potentially exposed social security numbers and other sensitive data, prompting officials to advise affected employees to be vigilant against fraudulent communications.
Additionally, a cyber attack on Japan's cloud service provider Arcadia may have compromised personal information of approximately 125,000 police officers and staff, while Kentucky's Cabinet for Health and Family Services reports security breaches at vendor Gainwell Technologies that exposed health information for nearly 4,000 individuals. These incidents highlight ongoing vulnerabilities in cybersecurity across various sectors.
