Low Carb Down Under

Prof. Grant Schofield - 'Low Carb for Public Health'

Low Carb Down Under

Summary

A recent discussion highlights concerns over the traditional food pyramid and its impact on public health, particularly regarding dietary guidelines that may do more harm than good. The speaker argues that the food pyramid, still prevalent in many countries, fails to address the complexities of individual dietary needs and may contribute to chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues. Emphasizing the role of insulin resistance, the speaker suggests that dietary approaches should focus on managing carbohydrate intake rather than adhering to outdated guidelines.

The conversation also critiques the lack of evidence supporting current dietary recommendations, advocating for a shift towards "real food guidelines." These guidelines prioritize whole, unprocessed foods and suggest minimizing added sugars and processed items. The speaker calls for a grassroots movement to promote these new dietary principles, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in reshaping public health nutrition. The discussion concludes with a call to action for individuals to spread awareness and encourage healthier eating habits based on real evidence.

Dr Penny Figtree graduated from the University of Sydney in 1993 with first class honours. With over 20 years in general practice she has now decided to focus on weight loss and diabetes. This decision was made after seeing the power of a low carbohydrate diet to help people lose weight and for some to even reverse diabetes. Dr Figtree had previously tried to help patients using various diets such as low fat diets, Optifast, the 5:2 fast but nothing really worked. In the end she would just say “as long as you are not gaining weight then that’s great”. Then Dr. Figtree read a book called “Always Hungry” By Professor David Ludwig where he explained the INSULIN CARBOHYDRATE MODEL OF OBESITY.Dr. Figtree has now been practising low carb medicine for several years. She describes this as the most rewarding part of her career, stopping medications and patients feeling well. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon.
