Summary
Dark matter, a mysterious substance that constitutes over 80% of the universe's mass, remains largely undetected despite extensive research. Recent discussions highlight a potential breakthrough involving primordial black holes (PBHs) as candidates for dark matter. These black holes, theorized to have formed shortly after the Big Bang, could exist in a mass range that aligns with the characteristics of dark matter. Current hypotheses suggest that if PBHs account for all dark matter, they would need to be significantly more abundant than known asteroids.
Recent studies propose that the solar system itself may act as a detector for these elusive PBHs. By analyzing the gravitational effects of PBHs on planetary orbits, particularly Mars, scientists hope to identify subtle shifts that could indicate a PBH's passage. The research emphasizes the importance of precise measurements and simulations to distinguish between the gravitational influences of PBHs and other solar system objects. Ongoing efforts aim to analyze twenty years of data on Mars' position to uncover any historical interactions with PBHs, potentially providing evidence for their existence as a component of dark matter.

Dark matter has eluded us for many decades. Even our most advanced particle colliders and sophisticated underground detectors have come up short. But it may be that we can finally solve this mystery with a much simpler experiment, involving a ray of light, a good clock, and the planet Mars.

In this first episode of the PBS DS mini-series, STELLAR, Matt travels to the top of Mauna Kea to visit the Gemini North telescope and see just how they found this ancient Quasar and it’s massive black hole. Stellar is a brand new miniseries done in collaboration with Dianna Cowern from @Physics Girl and Joe Hanson from @It's Okay To Be Smart Over six episodes we travel to some of the world's most important telescopes, go inside amazing space research centers, and talk with brilliant scientists. Next up, Dianna from Physics Girl visits LIGO observatory in Washington that detected the very first gravitational waves. Then Joe Hanson visits one of the telescopes that was part of world spanning Event Horizon Telescope. You'll be able to see future episodes on the Physics Girl and It’s Okay to be Smart YouTube channels, as well as the PBS Digital Studios Facebook page. Stellar is a part of the PBS Summer of Space. There will be lots of awesome space-related content all summer long on PBS.
