Can Space Time Keep Memory?

PBS Space Time

Summary

Marketers are increasingly calling out "bull spend," referring to advertising expenditures that yield impressive metrics but fail to translate into meaningful business results. This trend highlights the disconnect between vanity metrics, such as impressions, and actual revenue generation. The conversation emphasizes the need for marketers to focus on metrics that truly impact the bottom line, rather than those that merely look good on dashboards.

In a deeper exploration of gravitational waves, the discussion shifts to the concept of gravitational memory effects, which suggest that space-time can retain a permanent imprint from the passage of these waves. Unlike typical gravitational waves that oscillate and return space-time to its original state, memory effects indicate that some waves can cause lasting changes. These effects, which include displacement memory and velocity kick memory, remain undetected by current observatories like LIGO due to their subtlety and the limitations of existing technology.

The upcoming Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), scheduled for launch in 2035, is expected to provide the sensitivity needed to detect these elusive memory effects. LISA's design allows for the observation of low-frequency gravitational waves from massive cosmic events, potentially revealing new insights into the nature of gravity and the universe's history. The detection of these memory effects could not only confirm aspects of general relativity but also provide clues about dark matter and the early universe's conditions.

There are cosmic events so powerful that they leave permanent marks on the fabric of the universe itself. Imagine two colossal black holes spiraling into each other, yes they send ripples in the fabric of spacetime—gravitational waves that we’ve only recently learned to sense. Ripples pass, leaving the pond … or the universe … unchanged when they’re gone. But ripples aren’t the only type of wave. There’s another type of wave that leaves a permanent mark—a memory etched in the fabric of the universe. They’re akin to gravitational tsunamis, and we’re on the verge of being able to detect them.

We’ll explore these paradoxes and see why, against our intuition, the universe really does work in this seemingly nonsensical way. But the point of this episode is to go much further - we’re going to try to break the universe by pushing these paradoxes beyond the limit.Special Thanks to our Patreon Supporters Hank and Mark for suggesting the questions that inspired this episode! #space #relativity #paradoxCheck out the Space Time Merch Storehttps://pbsspacetime.comSign up for the mailing list to get episode notifications and hear special announcements!https://mailchi.mp/1a6eb8f2717d/spacetimeHosted by Matt O'DowdWritten by Matt O'Dowd Graphics by Leonardo Scholzer, Yago Ballarini, Pedro Osinski, Adriano Leal and Stephanie FariaDirected by Andrew KornhaberAssistant Producer: Setare GholipourExecutive Producers: Eric Brown and Andrew KornhaberEnd Credits Music by J.R.S.
