The Night a Dead Station Spoke: Tape Found, Engineer Dead

Fear and curiosity collide: a silent radio station that had been dark for two and a half years suddenly broadcast local programming to multiple residents, and a cassette labeled "DO NOT ERASE" was later found in a storm drain. The only person who could have made that broadcast was the station's longtime engineer, who died ten days after leaving one cryptic index card-what did he do, and why did he never explain it?

In this episode, we tell the sequence of events that began with a tape in a storm drain and ended with an unexplained death, following witnesses, registry logs, and family accounts to reconstruct who could have brought WHLF back on the air and what he left behind.

Person: Marcus Veld Age: 47 Event: Unlicensed broadcast heard by at least four residents on March 4, 2014 Found item: Cassette tape labeled "DO NOT ERASE" discovered March 9, 2014 Note left by deceased: Index card reading "it was on the air, it worked, someone will hear it"

- WHLF had been silent since September 2011 after a lightning strike destroyed its main transmitter. - Marcus Veld worked as WHLF's chief engineer from 1996 until the station closed, totaling 15 years. - At 5:45 AM on March 9, 2014, Jeffrey Zimmerman found the cassette tape in a storm drain at Morrow Street and Old Packer Road. - At least four Harlan Falls residents reported hearing local programming and a familiar voice on March 4, 2014. - A key registry shows "Debra Larsen" signed out the studio key at 7:18 PM on March 3, 2014, and the key was returned at 6:52 AM the next morning.
