The School of Life

Summary

Group health insurance presents challenges for businesses due to escalating costs and the difficulty of finding plans that cater to diverse employee needs. A new option, the Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA), offers a solution by providing predictable costs through stable pre-tax contributions. This model allows employees to select health plans that best suit their individual requirements, promoting a more personalized approach to health coverage.

The conversation shifts to the concept of platonic love, tracing its historical evolution from ancient Greece to the 11th century's courtly love tradition in Provence. The troubadours, who celebrated this form of love, emphasized devotion without the expectation of sexual intimacy. Their poetry reflects a deep admiration for their beloveds, capturing the essence of love that remains untainted by the practicalities of daily life, such as cohabitation or shared responsibilities.

This exploration of platonic love highlights a time when romantic feelings were cherished for their purity, free from the complications that often accompany modern relationships. The troubadours' perspective suggests that the intensity of love may thrive in the absence of everyday interactions, allowing for a more idealized and profound connection.

Show Notes

In the modern world, being in love with someone is always connected up with the idea of having (or wanting to have) sex with them eventually. The Troubadours of 11th century Provence, influenced by Plato, had a very different idea: for them love was independent of sex or indeed marriage.

One of the most provocative analyses of love ever produced is to be found in the writings of the Danish Existential philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. In a book entitled Works of Love, he proposed a theory which deliberately upset every leading idea that his own age liked to entertain about this hallowed concept.

Our societies are attached to a phrase which it can be a bit too easy to assume we understand. The talk is of people ‘growing’ and of having ‘grown’ which alludes to some kind of important psychological evolution and development. But what does ‘growing’ really involve? What is it we are developing a capacity to do when we so-called grow and what are we leaving behind? And, crucially, how might we train ourselves to grow a little more - and a little more quickly?

Our cameras make it so easy to feel we've captured what's important in the world. But to really appreciate what's around us, we might need to learn a weirder, less technologically-advanced skill: drawing.
