When Having It All Falls Apart: The Hidden Cost of Competence with Author Lizzete S Tupas
Online For Authors PodcastShow Notes
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lizette S Tupas, author of the book Always on a Tuesday. Lizzete S. Tupas is an author and healthcare strategist whose work explores identity, resilience, and the hidden cost of competence. With more than two decades of experience in healthcare, she brings a unique perspective to the ways high-performing people navigate expectation, control, and the often-invisible work of holding everything together.
Her debut novel, Always on a Tuesday, is a psychologically rich, character-driven story about what happens when the qualities that help us succeed begin to stand in the way of healing. Through her fiction and broader work, Lizzete is interested in the quiet moments that reshape us, the emotional architecture of capable people, and the complicated space between appearing fine and actually being well.
Born in the Philippines and raised in California, Lizzete writes with an abiding belief that people are often stronger, and more fragile, than they appear.
In my book review, I stated Always on a Tuesday is a literary fiction by Lizzete S. Tupas. This debut novel is about Loren, a middle-aged career woman who, on the outside, appears to have it all together. She has a great job. She's had long-term relationships. She has work associates. She helps take care of her aging parents.
However, on the inside? She's falling apart and has been for as long as she can remember. When issues at work, her family, and her social life all collide, the internal noise becomes noticable on the outside, and her actions and reactions make her take a deeper look.
One of the lines in the book that I love is when people tell Loren, "But you look good." So many times, what we have going on inside doesn't show. In fact, many people struggling with issues, mental health concerns, addictions, identity, and more function in society while quietly dying inside.
If you like a book that is very much inside of one woman's head, then this is the book for you.
