My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Theresa E Evans, author of the book Choosing to Die. Theresa Evans nursing career spanned fifteen years with a focus in Critical Care. She opened Stone Path Studio in 2007 where she taught therapeutic yoga and somatic movement. In 2014 she joined forces with Essential Somatics, LLC and began a 5 year journey of domestic and international travel teaching and developing program content for Clinical Somatic Trainings. In 2020 her mother died with MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying.) Choosing to Die is her first novel and was born out of the experience of supporting her mother through that process. Currently she lives in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin with her husband Pete. Her focus now is on advocating for choice through Assisted Death.

In my book review, I stated Choosing to Die is a memoir by Theresa E Evans. I have to admit, this was a difficult one for me to read. Having recently lost my husband to a devasting brain cancer, stories about death and dying touch me in places that are not always easy to handle. Nonetheless, I believe completely in the topic at hand - medical assistance in dying.

This is a topic that gets people up in arms. Should we take life into our own hands? And if so, how should it be done? Theresa doesn't dive into this controversy, instead focusing her book on the last months with her mom who had made the choice to die on her own terms. What did that look like and how did it feel as a daughter, especially as a daughter with a medical background?

This memoir is beautifully written and weaves the preparation of her mother's garden for winter with the winding down of her own mother's life. If nothing else, this book will show you what it looks like to show up for someone simply because you love them.
