The It Girl Show

003: Can you be ambitious and still want a simple business?

The It Girl Show

Show Notes

Can you want a successful, profitable, growing business… without wanting your business to consume your entire bloody life? I’ve been thinking about this a LOT. Because I am ambitious. I like making money. I like growing. I like having ideas and seeing what I’m capable of. But I also increasingly want my life — and my business — to feel simple. And for a long time, I think I subconsciously believed those two things contradicted each other. There’s a particular version of ambition online that seems to mean MORE. More revenue. More followers. More employees. More offers. More launches. More content. More platforms. More visibility. None of those things are inherently bad. But somewhere along the way, growth became synonymous with complexity. So in this episode of The It Girl Show, I’m asking a different question: What are you actually ambitious FOR? Because maybe you want more revenue without more working hours. Maybe you want more visibility without spending more time creating content. Maybe you want a bigger audience without sharing your entire life online. Maybe you want a very successful business without building an enormous company. That isn’t a lack of ambition. It’s getting considerably more specific about what you actually want. Inside this episode, we’re talking about: Why more doesn’t automatically mean better in business

How pregnancy changed the way I think about ambition, work and what I actually want my business to require from me

Why a simple business and an easy business are NOT necessarily the same thing

The danger of solving every business problem by adding another offer, platform, launch or strategy

Why I’m increasingly asking, “How can I make what already exists work better?”

How the MORE = BETTER mentality shows up in content creation

Why creating more content isn’t always the answer when your content isn’t doing what you want it to do

How better skills, batching, banking, reusing and repurposing can reduce how much your content depends on you constantly creating something new

The questions I’m using to decide what deserves my time, energy and attention as my business — and life — change

Because I don’t want to help you become less ambitious about what your content can do for your business. I want to help you become less dependent on constantly creating it. The goal isn’t small business = good and big business = bad. It’s to stop automatically chasing somebody else’s version of success and intentionally build towards the version you actually want. And if content is currently one of the things making your business feel considerably more complicated than you’d like, I’ve got something free to help you start simplifying it. It Girl B-Roll gives you seven useful clips you can film in less than 30 minutes, so you can start building a bank of content you can actually use instead of constantly wondering what the hell you’re going to film next. What if you're not actually “unphotogenic”? After more than 15 years photographing women professionally, I've heard some version of “I'm terrible in photos” more times than I can count. And I genuinely don't believe that looking good on camera is simply something some women are born knowing how to do and others aren't. In this episode, I'm talking about why being “photogenic” is much more learnable than we tend to think — and what is actually happening behind the scenes when a professional photographer makes someone look and feel good on camera. We're getting into: Why “just act natural” is possibly the world's least useful direction

Episode title: You Don’t Need to Become a Content Creator to Market Your Business Somewhere along the way, running a business started to come with a second, completely separate job: becoming a content creator. You might be a coach, photographer, designer, jewellery maker, salon owner, consultant… whatever. And suddenly you’re also expected to know how to film yourself, edit videos, write hooks, understand lighting, follow trends, take photos, talk to camera, post Stories and somehow come up with something new to say every bloody day. But here’s the problem: Content isn’t the thing you’re trying to build. Content is one of the ways you get people to notice the thing you’re trying to build. In this episode of The It Girl Show, I’m talking about the difference between being a business owner who uses content and being a content creator whose business is content — because social media has blurred that line so much that a lot of business owners are holding themselves to completely unrealistic standards. And honestly? I think it’s making content far harder than it needs to be. We’re getting into why you probably don’t need MORE production, MORE footage, MORE equipment or MORE time spent thinking about Instagram. You probably need more skill + less complication. Inside the episode, we talk about: Why comparing your marketing to a professional content creator’s actual job is a wildly unfair benchmark

If content has ever made you think, “Maybe I’m just shit at this,” this episode is for you. In the very first episode of The It Girl Show, I’m taking you back to where It Girl Content actually started — and spoiler: I did not set out to become a content educator. I’m sharing how 15+ years as a professional photographer, years of building and marketing businesses online, a pregnancy, a slightly different business plan aaaand a LOT of market research eventually led me here. Because the more I spoke to female business owners, the more I kept hearing the same things: “I don’t know what to film.” “I look awful on camera.” “My house isn’t nice enough.” “I’m not photogenic.” “I don’t have the right equipment.” And I realised something pretty bloody important: A lot of the things women were treating like personal deficiencies were actually skill deficiencies. Maybe you’re not “bad on camera.” Maybe nobody ever taught you how to pose. Maybe your house isn’t the problem. Maybe nobody taught you how to use light, framing and backgrounds. Maybe you don’t need a better phone, more equipment or a six-hour cinematic Reel. Maybe you just need to understand how to use what you already have. In this episode, I’m talking about how my photography brain and business brain eventually collided, why I don’t think you need to become a full-time content creator to market your business well, and what being an “It Girl” actually means around here. Because this isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about becoming really bloody good at a skill that used to feel really bloody hard — so content can stop taking up quite so much space in your brain. And if your current problem is simply, “Olivia, wtf am I actually supposed to film?” I’ve got you. Grab my free It Girl B-roll guide from the show notes and I’ll show you seven simple clips you can film in less than 30 minutes and reuse again and again. No complicated production required. And no, it’s not just seven different ways to drink a cup of coffee.
