Summary

Voltaire, born François-Marie Arouet in 1694, emerges as a pivotal figure in the Age of Enlightenment, known for his sharp wit and critical stance against authority, organized religion, and absolute monarchy. Despite a frail childhood, he lived to 84, navigating the complexities of royal courts and prisons while producing a vast body of work that includes plays, essays, and philosophical writings. His life is marked by a series of exiles and imprisonments, often due to his irreverent commentary on the nobility and the church.

Voltaire's literary career flourished in the salons of Paris, where he gained notoriety for his satirical poetry and plays. His works, including "Candide," critique optimism and expose the absurdities of human existence, often targeting the hypocrisy of religious and political institutions. His philosophical letters, written during his exile in England, reflect his admiration for British governance and religious tolerance, contrasting sharply with the intolerance he experienced in France.

Throughout his life, Voltaire maintained a complex relationship with power, often challenging it while simultaneously seeking its favor. His legacy endures through his extensive writings, which continue to resonate in discussions of free speech, human rights, and the critique of dogma. After his death in 1778, his remains were initially denied burial in consecrated ground by the Catholic Church, but he was later honored in the Pantheon during the French Revolution, solidifying his status as a symbol of Enlightenment thought.
