Warren G. Harding: The Most Corrupt President in US History

BioGraphics - True Biographies & History's Most Fascinating PeopleWednesday, October 28, 2026

Summary

Warren G. Harding, the 29th president of the United States, is often remembered for his lackluster leadership and the scandals that marred his presidency, particularly the infamous Teapot Dome scandal. Despite his charming demeanor and the initial popularity that saw millions lining the streets to pay their respects at his funeral, Harding's legacy is overshadowed by corruption and personal misconduct. His administration was plagued by the Ohio Gang, a group of friends and political allies who engaged in widespread graft and bribery, leading to significant public distrust.

Harding's rise to power was marked by a series of personal affairs, including a long-term relationship with Carrie Phillips, which he attempted to cover up with hush money. His political career began in Ohio, where he built a reputation as a genial figure who rarely made enemies, a trait that ultimately helped him secure the Republican nomination for president in 1920. However, his presidency was characterized by a lack of ambition and vision, as he preferred leisure activities over governance.

Despite the scandals, Harding did make some notable contributions, particularly in race relations and veterans' affairs. He advocated for economic equality and attempted to make lynching a federal crime, showcasing a desire to support marginalized groups. However, his administration's corruption, particularly the dealings surrounding the Teapot Dome oil reserves, ultimately defined his presidency. The scandal erupted shortly after his death in 1923, leading to investigations that revealed the extent of the corruption and further tarnished his reputation, solidifying his place as one of the least effective presidents in American history.
