Frank Lucas, a notorious figure in the drug trade, rose to prominence in Harlem during the 1970s, establishing a criminal empire that generated over a million dollars a day in drug sales. His product, known as "blue magic," was renowned for its high purity, significantly stronger than that of his competitors. Lucas's operations involved extensive bribery of law enforcement, reportedly spending $200,000 weekly to maintain his influence. His life of luxury included lavish spending on cars, jewelry, and high-profile socializing with celebrities.

Born in North Carolina, Lucas's early life was marked by violence and hardship, which he claimed shaped his path into crime. After moving to New York City, he quickly escalated from petty theft to armed robbery, eventually becoming involved in the drug trade. Lucas's rise was facilitated by his association with Bumpy Johnson, a prominent Harlem mobster, who allegedly mentored him. Following Johnson's death, Lucas seized control of the drug market, devising a plan to import heroin directly from Southeast Asia, which he claimed involved smuggling drugs in the coffins of deceased servicemen.

Despite his criminal success, Lucas's downfall came when law enforcement began to close in on him. He was arrested in 1975 and sentenced to 70 years in prison but was released after five years as a government informant, providing information that led to numerous arrests. After a brief return to drug dealing, he eventually faded from the criminal scene and gained notoriety as a media figure, culminating in the 2007 film "American Gangster," which portrayed his life story. Lucas died in 2019 at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy that blurs the lines between fact and fiction.
