Timeline - World History Documentaries

Summary

A new indoor water park, Game Day Bay, is set to open in Hall of Fame Village, Ohio, in spring 2027. The park will feature a variety of attractions including raft rides, a lazy river, a wave pool, interactive play areas, a swim-up bar, private cabanas, and an arcade. Day passes and season passes will be available, making it an ideal destination for families and friends.

The episode also delves into the life of Prince Charles Edward, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who was born into the British royal family but became a controversial figure due to his association with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. The narrative traces his journey from a privileged childhood in England to his forced relocation to Germany, where he inherited vast estates and titles. Despite his initial reluctance, he eventually aligned himself with the Nazis, believing they could restore order in post-World War I Germany.

As the political landscape shifted, Charles Edward faced the consequences of his choices during World War II, ultimately being branded a traitor in Britain after the war. His life ended in obscurity, marked by personal tragedy and the loss of his titles and wealth, while his sister, Princess Alice, remained a beloved member of the British royal family. Charles Edward's story serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of loyalty and identity in times of political turmoil.

Show Notes

Prince Charles Edward was Queen Victoria's favourite grandson. In 1900, the sixteen-year-old Prince was the only viable British contender for the hugely wealthy Dukedom of Saxe Coburg and Gotha in Germany. Ordered to go by Queen Victoria, he took the title and was transformed from a British Prince into a German Duke - Herzog Carl Eduard. The course of his life was altered in ways neither he nor Queen Victoria could have ever imagined. At the outbreak of the First World War, Prince Charles Edward had no option but to fight for Germany against the country of his birth. When the War ended, he was stripped of his British titles, and an Act of Parliament branded him a Traitor Peer. Disillusioned and depressed, Charles Edward became an enthusiastic supporter of Adolf Hitler's National Socialist Workers' Party, and unwittingly helped him in his rise to power. Appointing him President of the Anglo German Fellowship, Hitler offered Charles Edward a way to return to Britain with his head held high. Charles Edward was also President of the German Red Cross, and it was this that would ultimately embroil him in the darkest aspects of the Nazi regime, implicating him in the T4 Euthanasia Programme. At the end of the Second World War, he was arrested by the Americans, held in a series of harsh internment camps and forced to undergo a humiliating trial where, despite his claims he had no knowledge of the crimes of the regime, he was adjudged to have been an important Nazi and was almost bankrupted by heavy fines. He died in poverty and obscurity in Germany in 1954. His sister Princess Alice, who had stayed in England, became one of the most popular members of the Royal Family and a favourite aunt of Queen Elizabeth II. She was the living embodiment of the life her brother could have had, if it had not been for Queen Victoria's fateful decision fifty years earlier. Documentary first broadcast in 2007. This is an extraordinary story of the most disturbing witch trial in British history and the key role played in it by one nine-year-old girl. Jennet Device, a beggar-girl from Pendle in Lancashire, was the star witness in 1612 in the trial of her own mother, her brother, her sister and many of her neighbours; thanks to her chilling testimony, they were all hanged. Although the events in this film may date back four hundred years, its issues resonate today as much as ever - when to believe our children, and how, in times of crisis, fear of evil can easily lead us to behave in ways which may corrode the very values that we most wish to protect.Presented by Simon Armitage - poet, playwright and novelist - this film is peppered with his revealing insights into the characters' emotional turmoil and cutting-edge use of animation, bringing this courtroom drama to life. Four hundred years on, the trial's issues resonate as much as ever - when should we believe our children, and just how powerful can the fear of evil be? It's like Netflix for history...
