Show Notes

Guest: Professor Rebecca Loudoun is an internationally recognised authority in work health and safety, with more than 25 years of research experience translating rigorous empirical inquiry into policy reform and industry practice. Her research has shaped legislation and government policy across Australia and internationally. She developed the People at Work Construction Survey, now used by more than 100 organisations to identify psychosocial hazards. Episode: What does it really take to create a workplace where people can thrive? In this episode, the conversation explores why leaders are responsible for creating the right conditions for wellbeing, but not for determining how employees feel. Drawing on research in construction, FIFO work and other male-dominated industries, Rebecca explains three priorities for workplace mental health: minimising harm, amplifying the positive aspects of work and supporting people experiencing difficulties or returning after an absence. The discussion also examines the construction industry’s collective approach to suicide prevention, the fishbowl analogy for systemic change, the importance of capable and empowered supervisors, and how Bayesian network analysis can help organisations prioritise combinations of psychosocial hazards rather than addressing each issue in isolation.
