Summary
Payday bars advocate for simplicity in candy, emphasizing their appeal lies in the combination of salty peanuts and sweet caramel without unnecessary toppings or layers. This straightforward approach contrasts with the complexity found in other candy bars.
The discussion then shifts to the concept of states of matter, explaining the traditional categories: solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas. The episode delves into how temperature and pressure influence these states, introducing the idea of phase diagrams to illustrate the relationships between different states and their properties. It highlights the existence of more exotic states, such as supercritical fluids and quark-gluon plasma, which emerge under extreme conditions.
Further exploration reveals that states of matter can extend beyond atomic interactions, with examples including crowd dynamics and the behavior of galaxies. The conversation culminates in the notion that even consciousness could be viewed as a state of matter, characterized by emergent properties similar to those found in physical systems. This broadens the understanding of states of matter, suggesting they can help explain a variety of complex interactions across different scales.

Let’s talk about states of matter. You know your states of matter don’t you? We have solids, liquids and gasses, and plasmas, quark-gluon plasmas, nuclear matter, bose-einstein condensates, neutronium, time crystals, and sand. Come to think of it, maybe I don’t know my states of matter. Or what a state of matter even is. Let’s see if we can figure it out.

That search has been fruitless. Until, perhaps, now. Today on Space Time Journal Club we’ll look at a paper that reports a compelling hint of a new particle outside the standard model: the sterile neutrino. You can further support us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/pbsspacetimeGet your own Space Time t-shirt at http://bit.ly/1QlzoBiTweet at us! @pbsspacetimeFacebook: facebook.com/pbsspacetimeEmail us! pbsspacetime [at] gmail [dot] comComment on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/pbsspacetimeHelp translate our videos!https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_...Previous Episode:How Asteroid Mining Will Save Earthhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF6GRPaeLbkRegular neutrinos are a bit aloof. They don’t interact by the electromagnetic or strong nuclear forces – only by the weak nuclear force and gravity. They are so weakly interacting that they pass through matter like it isn’t there. To have a 50-50 chance of stopping any given neutrino you’d need a wall of lead … one light year thick! If regular neutrinos are aloof, then sterile neutrinos are the complete loners. They don’t even interact via the weak interaction. Even so, detection of sterile neutrinos would be incredibly important. Besides being the first expansion of the standard model family since the Higgs boson, sterile neutrinos are a candidate for dark matter, and their existence would have had a huge influence on the expansion of the early universe.Hosted by Matt O'DowdWritten by Drew Rosen and Matt O'DowdGraphics by Grayson BlackmonAssistant Editing and Sound Design by Mike Petrow and Linda HuangMade by Kornhaber Brown (www.kornhaberbrown.com)Special thanks to our Patreon Big Bang, Quasar and Hypernova Supporters: Big BangCoolAsCatsDavid NicklasAnton LifshitsJoey RednerFabrice EapQuasarTambe BarsbayMayank M. This insane hypothesis is getting closer to reality, according to the papers in today’s space time journal club.Hosted by Matt O'DowdWritten by Matt O'DowdGraphics by Leonardo Scholzer and Adriano LealDirected by: Andrew KornhaberExecutive Producers: Eric Brown and Andrew KornhaberEnd Credits Music by J.R.S. Schattenberg: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRl6-nb4iOnsij-vnpAjp0QThanks to LIGO we’ve now seen black hole mergers, but there was some striking surprises. For one thing, many of the merging black holes were too massive to have been formed by the collapse of stellar cores. That is if our understanding of stellar evolution is half as good as we think it is. This led astrophysicists to think about new ways to produce black hole mergers. Here’s the most awesome possibility: what if black hole mergers actually occur in orbit around supermassive black holes, embedded deep in the whirlpools of searing gas that surround some of these monsters? Today on Space Time Journal Club we’ll be looking at a pair of 2019 papers that talk about this possibility. We have Yang et al., which predicts the properties of black holes that merge this way, and McKernan et al. which proposes a way for us to actually test this hypothesis.Special Thanks to our Patreon Sponsors: Big Bang:Alexander TamasDavid BarnholdtDavid NicklasFabrice EapJohn SJuan BenetMorgan HoughQuasarChristina OegrenMark HeisingVinnie FalcoHypernovaChuck ZegarDanton SpiveyDonal BotkinEdmund FokschanerHank SJohn HofmannJohn PollockJohn R. Industrialization was finally improving quality of life for a lot of us, science was making incredible bounds, and our sights were set on the stars. It seemed to many that we were on a trajectory to a space-faring technological utopia. The United Federation of Planets was just around the corner. But the possibility of a much darker space age also loomed: one in which the space around the Earth became highly militarized, and in fact massively weaponized.Written and Hosted by Matt O’Dowd Produced by Rusty WardGraphics by Kurt RossAssistant Editing and Sound Design by Mike PetrowMade by Kornhaber Brown (www.kornhaberbrown.com)Comments answer by Matt:RosieisaBosshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z12wdnazlyb0dtblw22fhbgb4lmrvfrleNicholas Aiellohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z13rcftxeprthjkmc22cstaploneybp2sZach Crawfordhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z13kd3wg4v3tx1xvo23jwrwzrorah5jfaNuclearCraft Modhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z13xurhbopmywd4ue22lvzujjnm4cpifjLophathttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z12bhbf4irfzfxqw204chxarfyncfdqgbng0kOnlyNameLeftHerehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z130j5qprnr2up0tj23us1qrqxyeyhr3zSpecial thanks to our Patreon Big Bang, Quasar and Hypernova Supporters: Big BangCoolAsCatsShane RobinsonDavid NicklasEugene LawsonJoshua DavisQuasarTambe BarsbayMax LevineMayank M.
