Summary
The Silk Road, a vital economic route before the Age of Discovery, facilitated the trade of numerous goods, with silk being the most prized commodity. The Roman Emperor Justinian I's efforts to acquire silk production technology from China mark one of the earliest known instances of industrial espionage. The Chinese had maintained a monopoly on silk production since domesticating the mulberry silkworm around 4000 BC, and the fabric became a luxury item throughout the ancient world.
As silk began to circulate through Central Asia to regions like Iran and Europe, the Roman economy thrived on its trade. However, the outflow of gold to China and Iran due to high demand for silk contributed to economic instability, culminating in the crisis of the 3rd century and the eventual fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Eastern Roman Empire, under Justinian, sought alternative routes to secure silk, but faced numerous challenges, including ongoing wars with the Sassanids and piracy.
In a bold move, two Nestorian monks approached Justinian in the 550s, claiming they could help him solve the silk dilemma. After two years of travel, they successfully smuggled silkworm eggs or larvae back to Constantinople, along with mulberry bushes for sustenance. This act effectively broke the Chinese and Sassanid silk monopoly, allowing the Roman Empire to establish its own silk industry, which became crucial for the economic prosperity of Constantinople and the rise of Italian merchant republics.

Alexander’s conquests gave way to a period of constant warfare amongst his Seleucid, Ptolemaic and Antigonid successors, while the rising Roman juggernaut began a series of conquests to unite the Italian Peninsula, and fought its Carthaginian Rival, paving the way for future dominance. Nader Shah’s climb isn’t just a story of battlefield brilliance—it’s a masterclass in turning chaos into power. In 1729, with Iran shattered by famine, disease, and Afghan occupation, Nader pivots from securing the east to ripping the invaders out of the Safavid heartland. You’ll follow the campaign toward Isfahan, beginning with Ashraf Hotaki’s push into Khorasan and the decisive Battle of Mehmandost, where Nader’s disciplined musketeers, artillery, and a calculated “retreat” shatter a larger cavalry-heavy army. After outmaneuvering an ambush near Varamin, Nader meets Ashraf again at Murche-Khort—then marches into Isfahan as the capital rejoices at the return of Safavid rule. But victory creates new problems: Nader leverages fatigue and politics to extract provinces, taxes, and royal marriages, transforming himself from commander into powerbroker. The war then shifts west against the Ottomans, culminating in Malayer Valley and the recapture of key cities. Finally, rebellion in the east sparks another Herat campaign—setting the stage for Nader’s decisive move: removing Tahmasp and ruling as regent over the infant Abbas III.More videos on the history of Iran and the Middle East:Nader Shah #1 - Battle of Herat: https://youtu.be/8NgE0Ec9KB0Were the Eastern Romans and Arabs Always at War?: https://youtu.be/nBMP6yRAOZgGreat Schism Between Greek and Latin Christianity: https://youtu.be/a6rWf0k8d78How Islam Split into the Sunni and Shia Branches: https://youtu.be/-85dXjgMiSURise of the Cossacks: https://youtu.be/UQ_ocyTRRIECrusades From the Muslim Perspective: https://youtu.be/t8RZtYvW02gEarly Muslim Expansion - Yarmouk, Al-Qadisiyyah: https://youtu.be/r2cEIDZwG5M Early Muslim Expansion - Egypt and Iran: https://youtu.be/baHT2nR5Wr4 Muslim Schism: https://youtu.be/-85dXjgMiSU Third Crusade: https://youtu.be/jCyCSgsFXKQ Fourth Crusade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vp_IENiSnA&list=PLaBYW76inbX4ZjR4rodOOSc-zL1orP4hW First Crusade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkyYjpYLORI&list=PLaBYW76inbX6RqjG027zLO_svn3Fdv7Qa Sultanate of Women in the Ottoman Empire: https://youtu.be/OEzS8D4IidA How the German Empire Provoked Ottoman Jihad in WWI: https://youtu.be/8LCpbgVx9kY Ottoman Battles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txyqS5yuw30&list=PLaBYW76inbX5BKGRPzlqdztQySZmJLjJt Why the Ottomans Never Colonized America: https://youtu.be/lM_Wzt_Z228Why the Ottoman Sultans Killed their Brothers: https://youtu.be/vN7LgUIOAVw Cem Sultan: Ottoman Prince in the Heart of Europe: https://youtu.be/3w9POQMt5jk Ottoman Pirates: https://youtu.be/5jguevSDIuY Turkification of Anatolia: https://youtu.be/JBgq1taoUsY Hashashins: https://youtu.be/vG8qmlKdRjs The video was made by Talha Sial, while the script was researched and written by Turgut Gambar.
